Next up… Problem-Solving. We are expert problem solvers because we are trained to look at problems from so many different perspectives.? Macro, mezzo, and micro social work teach us that challenges don’t just exist at the individual level, but at the community and society level as well. Whether it’s dealing with a difficult client or navigating a complex bureaucracy, social workers are used to finding creative solutions that work effectively for all parties involved.? Now if there is anything I know about business after running one since 2005, you will encounter problems.? Being able to solve them with a social work lens is an asset.

Consider how well social workers hold up under pressure.? And let’s not forget about communication skills! Social workers are masters at listening, understanding, and communicating with all sorts of people from all walks of life. As a business owner, you’ll need to communicate with your clients, employees, vendors, referral sources, community partners, and more. With your social work experience, you’ll be a pro at building strong relationships and getting your message across effectively so you can build coalitions that help you serve your clients and gain the respect of your community.
