Social Media's Threat to Network Security

Social Media's Threat to Network Security

In our ongoing focus on #cybersecurity and #dataprotection, we’ve been fascinated by the identification of Jack Teixeira, the airman who’s been charged with sharing classified documents. One of the most interesting things is how easy it can be for employees to share sensitive information over social media - and how simple it is for that information to fall into the wrong hands.?

As we see it, a few factors could contribute to the risk:

  1. Lack of awareness: Younger team members especially may not fully understand the difference between sharing information online and offline, or realize that certain information should be considered confidential to the company.?
  2. Social credibility: We all like to be helpful and want to offer tips and insights to colleagues and friends - and in some online forums, it’s hard to know who truly needs or wants the insight, and who might be lurking and seeking information to share.?
  3. Actual threats: Unfortunately, there might be occasions where employees intentionally disclose confidential information. It could be in anger at a company decision, or for financial gain, but the result will be the same.?

In our industry, if the wrong information gets shared, it could threaten internet access for millions and open the door to bad actors. What are you doing to prevent the spread of information on social media? Do you have educational or training programs for your team on confidential information??
