Social Media vs Real Life for Leaders, Teachers & Entrepreneurs

Yesterday, during a branding and business set up consultation, I met with a former teacher turned entrepreneur. The day was all about gaining clarity on her vision for her business and her mission. We were able to dive deep into her why, develop a how and prepare for her launch. Immediately afterwards she questioned me about my business. She shared some hard hitting facts that ultimately challenged my ability to be as transparent on social media as I am within a classroom or on a stage.

In short, she was telling me that the person I purport to be on social media doesn't resonate well with who she gets to see in real life when she volunteers at @MogulAcademy. I have never in my life realized that I was purposefully not being vulnerable with those that follow me on social media. Yet, she saw a different person in real life that made what I do with and for the kids worthy of her dedication. The real life Jessica resonated better with her. It is the main reason why she volunteers and promotes all that we do.

If you are an educator, a leader or a parent, most of the time you are concerned with how people perceive you within an authoritative capacity that you ignore opportunities to be relatable to the people that matter the most. Online, I look like I have it all together to some but they aren't able to see that in real life, my students are loyal and dedicated to me because I am vulnerable with them. They see what I go through daily and what I sacrifice in order to ensure I do all that I can for them.

The human experience allots for connection based on relatability . That is what bonds people in a way that makes room for significant growth, relationship building and efficiency. No matter your industry or field you are working with others in some capacity. If you want that work/job to be more of a joy for you , it is in your best interest to let people know who you are, what you have been through and how those experiences will add value to your presence in the room. It is not just about you either. You need to let others know why their stories matter as well. If we know who you are working with you can better activate their talents, expertise and network.
