Social Media Trends & Tips: July 15-19

Each week on Friday I share 4-8 articles that I thought were particularly insightful or useful from the previous week. If you like what you see below, you can subscribe to my weekly e-newsletter where I share articles and perspectives like this--as well as local jobs, events and news around Minneapolis/St. Paul: https://tinyurl.com/5n8xp294

Here's what I thought you might find interesting this week:

Companies continue to ignore mainstream media--is that the right move?

“Company X did not respond to a request for comment.”?

It's become a pervasive statement in many news stories. And according to some recent research, probably more widespread than you even thought.

In May 2014, the term “did not respond to a request for comment” returned 728 mentions in a Nexis database search, according to a recent post by Gini Dietrich. In 2019, that number had swelled to 1,590. In 2023, it grew to a whopping 3,616.

Some companies have just completely given up on traditional media relations. According to Alex Bolen, the CEO of Oscar de la Renta, "I don’t know that having the press advances our business interests. We don’t really engage with magazines at this point." Whoa.

Now, I'm not sure I see the same level of disinterest as that which is laid out in GIni's post below. I have a couple clients who are chugging along full-steam ahead with traditional media relations. They're still seeing good results. But, I have noticed opportunities are drying up. There's just no question traditional media relations is changing and more companies are choosing to either circumvent the media or completely ignore it.

The good news is this is an opportunity for us to shift with it. Read More

Which topics are Gen Zers searching for on social media?

This is pretty interesting. Not surprising to see make-up and recipes near the top on TikTok, obviously. But, really interesting to see what's at the bottom of the TikTok list and how it corresponds with Google searches. Read More

I gave myself one month to make a new friend. How hard could it be?

After I read that study and wrote about it, I had a conversation with a client who said they didn't want to respond to journalists' questions because "they don't want to give away their strategy." I asked when they would be prepared to have the conversation, and they said, " The day after we launch." ??
