Social Media Predictions From 2024 That Didn't...Quite...Make...It.

A breakdown of social media industry predictions made last that did not pan out as expected, or at least didn’t fully materialize:

1. The Decline of "Traditional" Social Media Platforms

  • Prediction: Platforms like Meta's Facebook and Instagram were expected to decline significantly in user engagement due to competition from newer platforms and shifting demographics.
  • Reality: While user growth has slowed for these platforms, they remain dominant in terms of active users (3B+) and ad revenue ($40B in Q3 2024, up 19%). Both Facebook and Instagram continued to innovate (and steal ideas to make their own), such as enhancing their e-commerce capabilities and maintaining their relevance among older demographics and small businesses.

2. Virtual Reality (VR) Integration Becoming Mainstream

  • Prediction: VR was forecasted to play a larger role in social media, with platforms integrating VR spaces or functionalities as part of the "metaverse" push.
  • Reality: The metaverse lost momentum in 2024. VR adoption in social media remained niche, primarily limited to gaming communities or specialized use cases. Meta's Horizon Worlds struggled to gain traction among everyday social media users.

3. X's Complete Decline

  • Prediction: Many (including yours truly) predicted the collapse of X as a platform due to declining trust, user frustration, and increased competition.
  • Reality: Although X faced significant challenges and a large reduction in ad revenue, it has retained a core user base and began pivoting toward a more subscription-based model. Its complete collapse did not occur, as was widely anticipated. And with a new(ish) presidential administration taking over that's not only friendly to X but includes its majority stakeholder, reports of the platform's death may now be greatly exaggerated.

4. TikTok Becoming the Primary Search Engine for Gen Z

  • Prediction: TikTok was expected to overtake Google as the preferred search engine for younger audiences.
  • Reality: While TikTok saw growth in search-related behavior, it didn’t dethrone Google. Users often combined TikTok’s visual search capabilities with traditional search engines rather than fully replacing them. With a looming ban on the app in the U.S., we could simply see a return to Google for those users...OR a potential move to using AI search engines? (But thats a prediction for 2025, possibly)

5. Social Media SuperApps Gaining Traction

  • Prediction: Platforms like X and WeChat were expected to lead the rise of "superapps" in Western markets, consolidating multiple functionalities (social networking, payments, shopping, etc.) into a single app.
  • Reality: Umm...no. At least not here in the U.S. SuperApp development in Western markets stalled. While apps like X experimented with payments and e-commerce, they didn’t reach the level of integration or adoption seen in platforms like WeChat in China.

6. A Major Shift to Audio-Only Content

  • Prediction: Audio-focused social media (like pandemic lockdown-favorite Clubhouse or Spaces on X) was expected to make a significant resurgence.
  • Reality: I'm disappointed to say, this isn't happening in a big or meaningful way. The hype around audio-only content faded further in 2024. Clubhouse continued its huge decline, and Spaces remained underutilized except for niche audiences or a sparse few live news events.

7. Blockchain and NFTs Becoming Mainstream in Social Media

  • Prediction: Blockchain-based social networks and NFT integrations were expected to grow significantly, creating new monetization opportunities.
  • Reality: Interest in blockchain and NFTs declined sharply in 2024 as market skepticism and user fatigue with Web3 concepts set in. Major platforms pulled back on NFT-related features.

8. Influencer Fatigue Leading to Reduced Engagement

9. Heavy Regulation of Social Media Platforms

  • Prediction: Governments were expected to impose stricter regulations on social media platforms, particularly concerning data privacy and misinformation.
  • Reality: While discussions around regulation intensified, there were no major legislative breakthroughs in most regions, especially in the U.S. Platforms self-regulated to avoid stricter government intervention, but significant changes were minimal.

10. The Death of Organic Reach

  • Prediction: Organic reach was predicted to diminish entirely, forcing brands to rely exclusively on paid strategies to reach their audiences.
  • Reality: While organic reach remains challenging, certain types of content (like trending Reels, TikToks, and LinkedIn posts) continued to achieve high organic engagement when done well.

What do you think? Were there any additional predictions for 2024 that you remember or noted that didn't happen either partially or at all?
