Social Media Posting Frequency

I want to talk to you about social media posting frequency.

I get this question a lot, "Hey, Rob. How frequently must we post?"

It's a valid question.

Here's the thing is that if you don't learn to educate, entertain, and engage your audience it doesn't matter how frequently you post because nobody is going to care.

When you're posting to social media, sure, there is a general rule of frequency. Your posts can't be always about you. They have to be about your fans, friends, and followers.

Why do I say this?

What's this important thing about posting?

You know, I help clients all day long. Here's the thing, if you're posting once a day maybe that's good for your industry. If you're posting three, four, five times a day maybe that's great for your industry. Even Walt Disney World only posts so many times a day because they don't want to annoy their customers or sound like an unwelcome pest.

They want to to entertain. They want to educate. They want to engage in what they're delivering.

Frequency also depends on the day, the time, and your subject. One of the things that I teach all my clients is to theme out their days. Say today is Tuesday. Why not make today a testimonial Tuesday? One of your posts should be about how people have benefited from your service.

Now in all respect, if you're posting 20 times a day on Facebook maybe that's too much. Dial it back. Start out with one time a day and then two times a day. If people are liking what you're posting and engaging then take it up to four times a day. If all you're getting is likes and nobody is commenting and nobody is sharing then it doesn't matter.

The key is to get people to comment on what you're posting to get them to share your posts with their fans, friends, and followers.

I don't care if you get 1000 likes on something. Likes don't mean anything. The whole key is getting them to engage. You can't get them to engage if you have crappy content.

Like I said, make your content about them. Not about all the things that you can offer them. That's great but that comes down to pushing a product. You don't want to be known as the guy who is constantly pushing a product.

Now I use realtors a lot as an example because all they know how to do is post property listings. If you're a realtor reading this I want you to understand that that's not the right way to do things. Just because you have a hundred listings that you want to get out there to show people that maybe you have all this inventory of homes, posting homes every single day, listings day in and day out, doesn't work. You have to mix it up. I made other videos about mixing it up.

One of the videos I made is a reference to peanut butter and jelly and how after a while eating that peanut butter and jelly gets tiresome. Well, if you're providing the same type of content day in and day out that's that peanut butter and jelly. By theming out your days you know exactly what's supposed to be published on those days and you know how to create content for those days.

One of the things that I think is the perfect frequency is about three to four times a day on your business page.

Now you might be saying, "Rob, I don't have time for that."

Yes, you do! It's very easy.

Every morning, come up with four posts. That's it. Four posts. Schedule them on Facebook. If Facebook is the only social network that you're using that's all you need. It takes you 10, 15 minutes at most to come up with posts and to schedule them.

It's not rocket science.

It does take some patience, it does take some understanding of who your clients are and what they mean to you. If you want to spam them with garbage all day long, that's the type of client that you're going to get. If you're going to entertain them with quality content then you're going to get quality customers that want to use your service and want to refer you to somebody else. It's up to you. Frequency is key.

Now let's talk about Twitter.

Because Twitter is a whole different animal.

Twitter is very fast-paced, it can be chaotic at some times, and I think it's geared to the Attention Deficit Disorder entrepreneurs. On Twitter, sometimes the average person posts over 100 times a day on Twitter. That's insane. If you dial it back and you're posting at least 20 times a day then you're golden. That's all you need.

Again, you're thinking, "Oh my God. 20 times a day? Four times a day on Facebook?"

Then you got to deal with Snapchat and Instagram and LinkedIn and Pinterest.

Then your head explodes...

...because that's all you're doing is creating content.

What I want you to understand is you pick the networks you want to be on.

You pick the networks you feel are comfortable for you and you focus on them exclusively. If you just want to do Facebook and Instagram then do Facebook and Instagram and become a master at them. If you want to do Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter then be a master at those. If you just want to do Snapchat and Facebook, great.

You don't have to do every single network.

I think that when people look at what they have to post frequency-wise on those networks they go insane because they say, "I don't have time for all that." That's true.

If you had to sit there all day long and post to all the different networks you wouldn't get anything done. Just pick one or two, three at the most, social networks that resonate with you, that have the types of clients that are following you, and are easy for you to give feedback, to comment when someone leaves a comment, and it's easy for you to monitor.

Don't worry about posting 20 times a day to Twitter if it's not your style. Don't worry about posting four times a day to Facebook if it's not your style.

Post the amount of times it feels comfortable for you.

I will tell you that if you just post once a day your content may get lost in the shuffle. If you post one time a day to your business page it may not be enough. Try two times a day and you're going to start to see some magic happen. When you post three times a day, every eight hours or so, you're going to see that your clientele sticks around. They start to read your stuff.

Now I know that some of you don't have a lot of content that you share. Post about what goes on in your neighborhood. Post what goes on in your community. Post things that might be of interest to your clientele, to your fans, to your audience.

It's not rocket science. I keep telling people this. It's common sense.

If you want people to follow you on social media then you've got to kick it up a notch. You've got to up the ante and you've got to post more frequently. Now if you need help in the whole frequency and what to post and how to post this is what I do every single day. I can help you. It does require you to take some action and some effort. This is not throwing an ad up on the phone book and a year from now, change the ad. This is you being real, raw, and emotional and sharing your experiences and your joys with your audience. You can't do that if you're not posting enough.
