I miss the days when each social media platform had its own unique flavour and features. But in today's landscape, it seems that originality is becoming harder to find. YouTube’s latest update, ‘Add Yours’ for Shorts, is the perfect example of this trend. It’s essentially a clone of Instagram’s Stickers, which themselves were initially inspired by TikTok’s Duets.

This evolution raises an interesting question: with so much overlap between platforms, are these ‘borrowed’ features still effective in driving meaningful engagement, or are users starting to crave something truly new and innovative?

The Rise of Feature Replication

YouTube's new ‘Add Yours’ sticker for Shorts allows users to create video responses to others' content, encouraging interaction and community engagement. While this sounds exciting, it is not a new concept. TikTok pioneered this kind of feature with its ‘Duet’ functionality, which quickly became a popular way to boost user interaction and expand content reach.
