Social Media Marketing Costs for SMB's

It’s common knowledge that setting up and running any social media network is free. Yet, even though social media is a free service, it really doesn’t do much for you or your business unless you put a lot into it. A successful social media marketing strategy for a business can take a lot of time, creativity, planning, and most of all… money. If you’re a business owner that still thinks that a social media campaign is only costing you time, then you haven’t been monitoring your results. Without spending money on ad spend or boosting posts, you are missing out on reaching a sizeable audience and earning tangible results.

Adspend

I’ve had several entrepreneur experiments where I’ve used a Facebook page to brand my business. My first entrepreneur experiment was in 2009. Typically every post that I created would have a reach of hundreds to thousands of people. My next entrepreneur phase was in 2014. A comparable post to my previous experiment would deliver a reach of about five people. I quickly learned that for business pages, Facebook became a paid advertising platform. Other networks have quickly mimicked this business model and the difference between adspend and no adspend is monumental for networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Houzz, and a growing amount of others.

Below is a snapshot of a post with no adspend from my second entrepreneur phase in 2014.  I tried to provide a snapshot of my 2009 entrepreneur phase but Facebook no longer shares that data… Well played Facebook.

Is setting up an Ad Campaign Easy?

Just like Google or Bing, setting up an ad campaign on Facebook, Linkedin, or any other online paid advertising site is very easy. There is no surprise that these sites make it as easy as possible to take your money. Yet, just because it’s easy to get the ball rolling, doesn’t mean that obtaining a successful campaign is smooth sailing.

What determines the cost of Social Media Ad Spend?

There are many factors that determine the cost of ads. Social Networks, ad types, and targeting are just some of the key factors that influence the cost of social media ads. However, just like any paid advertising platform, the level of competition based on industry and location typically have the most impact. Social media adspend as a strategy is growing fast. It’s best to get in the game early when costs are still somewhat low.

  • Social Networks: Facebook is king of the social media ad game. The price of ads is increasing based on the increasing amount of users. LinkedIn is becoming a widely used lead generation campaign and the cost per clicks is getting high. Instagram isn’t as expensive, but that’s because they are newer to the game. Just like any paid advertising platform, the cost per impressions, clicks, leads, etc. will only increase after time because of the inflation of competition and users.
  • Ad Types: Facebook for example, has numerous types of ads: Post Boosts, Video Advertising, Domain Ads, Page Post Link, Multi-Product, Events, Offers, Apps, and more. Here’s a Beginner’s Guide to Facebook Advertising. Every different type of ad has a separate cost based on competition.
  • Targeting for Facebook: Facebook allows you to choose your right audience and claims that it’s “89% accurate”. You can target by device, location, demographics, interests, and behaviors. Facebook also has advanced targeting options that allow creating a custom audience by uploading a list, and then you can use a lookalike audience to find similar people from that index.   • Targeting for LinkedIn: LinkedIn is great for targeting your prospects by using: location, company name, industry, company size, individual job title, function, seniority, member skills, schools, what degree they have and field of study, member groups they participate in, gender and age.   • Targeting for Twitter: Allows you to target competitors, brands, industry media, influencers, and those with a similar audience and following. Read more on this here.
  • Audience Reach. A broad approach will deliver your ads to a larger bucket of people. Yet, a specific approach will deliver a narrower group of people who are more likely to take an action. See Facebook’s audience reach below:

Why hire a Social Media Service?

I typically mention that hiring a professional is always best in all my blogposts. I don’t say this because I’m a digital marketer by profession but I truly believe that it’s in most businesses best interest. Again, setting up a social media account is easy. Starting an ad campaign is easy. However, if you are not a marketing professional or a social media specialist, then it’s going to be quite unlikely that you will get back what you put into the campaign. Typically, a modern social media package includes optimizing an account, managing that account, creating/posting the content, and managing the adspend. The better the professional is at this, the better your results.

Very comprehensive article. For Facebook I'd add 2 points. While your reach was only 5, that is in no way conclusive as to how many people actually saw the post - only to how many Facebook presented it in the news feed. You may have actually received far more views than expected. In my case, the traffic to my website is very high yet posts have a combined reach well below that figure. At the same time ads may be shown to a particular audience (which you pay for) but how many of those views result in results? The second piece - Facebook has a great targeting feature in something called Dark Posts (https://ow.ly/SRQaU). Hiring an expert is a smart move for some of the above reasons. There are ways to drive reach without spending a dime and ways to get better value for what you spend. (Or maybe change the goal of your campaign to drive something external). It's often cheaper to hire the professional and do it right.
