Social Media of Live Streaming - Too Much Immediacy?

Social Media of Live Streaming - Too Much Immediacy?

Facebook is ramping up its live streaming not without controversy, as gruesome crimes are now "on demand" live on online video, this kind of horrific content makes me wonder about the use of such technologies that cannot recognize risky or "sketchy" content until it is too late, and seen potentially by millions of people.

Brands are Testing Facebook Live

Facebook live enables brands to give fascinating behind the scenes and other on-demand campaigns, that can be engaging. As a move from social media to more direct means of communication becomes the norm, live video streaming will become a more diverse ecosystem.

Live Streaming & Gaming

Facebook live will soon be integrated with major video games  taking on services like Twitch. Twitch is used by 100 million people and is Amazon-owned showing how Facebook live may have more competition in the future.

The Twitter-Periscope Option

Twitter now includes in a recent update, a Periscope button that is  now available to everyone using its Android and iOS apps.

Starting a Periscope broadcast from Twitter is very appealing, as Twitter followers are a more seamless way to reach people that feels more intimate than a Facebook live broadcast. Hopefully, this will help scale Periscope. Curiously the Millennial entrepreneur blogging platform Medium, is already highly integrated with Twitter. It is unclear when and how Medium will integrate video into its publishing platform.

How Immediacy is Gruesome

Facebook live and Snapchat video giving insight to crimes is a horrific intersection of social media and live news. Last monday's fatal attack on a policeman and family in France in which the culprit posted on Facebook a live 13-minute video of himself with the victim's child, in which he admitted the murders and urged fellow jihadists to carry out more bloodshed is the latest bizarre and disturbing negative uses of live streaming.

There's even a video of some of the last moments of one of the victims of the Orlando shooting. Facebook live videos of people being shot or committing suicide, marks one of the most bizarre twists in social media yet.

Is Video Content that's On-Demand Here to Stay?

With the rise of video content as an on-demand channel becoming more mainstream; Snapchat, YouTube and Facebook are ushering in a new era of how we communicate, broadcast, brand and relate to memes, viral content and how we follow influencers.

Judging by the new digital reality, live crime is not going away anytime soon especially in the US where public shootings and access to firearms remains an increasing hot topic in the upcoming presidential race. When crime shows receive such high TV ratings in the USA, can we be surprised that live crime on social media is capturing a lot of attention. What I find noteworthy is how this has quickly become the new normal.

Facebook

In a world where Facebook wants desperately to be  in on all of our experiences, Facebook live video is creating a whole different level of an internet of streams.

The best way to navigate pulse:

Millennials | Retail Student Voices |  Marketing  |  Customer Experience Women |Entrepreneurship | Innovation | Apparel & Fashion Marketing |Social Media |Technology | Social Impact

Oh God, I didn't even hear about the Live stream of the terrorist in France on the news in the US. That's absolutely horrific. I have actually never witnessed any negative videos on Facebook's Live Stream, thankfully. I dislike Twitter because the functionality is not the kind of social coverage I prefer to enjoy. I am more of an avid Instagram user until more recently when I started using Facebook more often because of the 360 degrees videos and the Live Streams. I also see news more often on Facebook than any other social media platform. Facebook is a great way to help dispel the negative connotations made on the Islamic community due to the great efforts on Daesh's part to make us look like blood-thirty mass-murderers. What I have seen from the Live Streams is an amazing opportunity taken by independent news outlets and volunteer/charity organizations abroad to show unbiased and unedited broadcasts. It's a great way to feel like you're getting the news in-the-moment and unscripted without political bias from all over the world. I definitely understand your point of view on the Live Steaming being a little too accessible in situations of "Live Crime," however, even in light of finding out this is something that is happening, I think perhaps it is better this way so that we actually know what is going on. I think it would make it harder for the government to lie or induce more paranoia about minorities if people have access to live streaming. As a scarf wearing Muslim woman, sometimes I wish I had something like this all of the time because I am often harassed in public by strangers, I've had people follow me in my car and men in pick-up trucks yell at me when I'm driving. I'm honestly always on edge in public and I would hope that if one of the islamophobes were to physically attack me in public someone would catch it on video. A sister of mine was physically attacked by a man in a theater for being Muslim and her only witness was her friend. Out of fear she stopped wearing her hijab. I hope that live stream videos catch more crimes so that people will live more fearfully of following the law.

Why do we always blame tools for the world's problems? Suicide, crime, and violence existed before live streaming. Are we no longer blaming tv and film for our bad behavior? Is social media now the new scapegoat? When will we stop focusing on symptoms and look at the real causes, start making ourselves more accountable for our behavior online and off?

That's why I think they are bad tools, even if there are many positive sides. Just as for the death punishment, I'm against because I prefer not enjoying the positive sides to protect us from the negative ones. I prefer not taking the risk of having an innocent person killed. For live streaming tools, I prefer not taking the risk of seeing someone killed, tortured, injured, or filming herself before death, live. Yes indeed they can provide great opportunities but we cannot afford letting the bad use of these technologies! Can you imagine what this child has lived??? What about this girl live streaming her suicide, we can imagine that live streaming gave her the impression that some people were listening to her, for once. Maybe she would not have killed herself without this live window on Earth. We must stop these tools by a way or another, the bad consequences are too high. Techlikers, Stop being selfish!
