Social Media. Social good.

A step-by-step guide to harnessing the potential of social media to help ensure we achieve the Global Goals. Download here.

It is hard to imagine now, but until fairly recently only the largest international organizations held the capability to identify, collate and compare information about sustainable development-related opportunities and challenges, and to connect people and places.

Rather than relying on global blueprints, it is clear that imparting real knowledge about good practices and bottlenecks best comes through the guidance and experience of those who have tried and tested decision-making and implementing in comparable settings. Who better to advise a local programme or community in Sao Paulo than a similar organization in Chiang Mai or Kampala?

Social media now places the capability to share and juxtapose local experience in the hands of every person and organization, regardless of size or budget. It offers significant new opportunities for development-focused organizations to enhance their engagement with and dialogue with their stakeholders, invite increasing input/feedback into their own thinking, contribute to ongoing problem-solving, recognize the work of partner organizations and help increase awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ‘Agenda 2030’.

Despite this incredible opportunity, many organizations continue to use social media to communicate in ‘conventional’ ways: to simply tell the world their own institutional ‘news’.

Over the past few years, the Inis team has been engaged by some leading development organizations to help manage and orient their social media accounts. While doing so, we also conducted some on-the-ground research to explore if and how some of the biggest organizations are engaging with their social media audiences.

In Social Media. Social Good. we share with you what we learned during these opportunities, as well as documenting the systematic approach we have adopted to help ensure that the social media accounts we help our clients to manage achieve their broader goals.

By its very nature, the guide is a ‘work in progress’. We now need, and warmly welcome, your suggestions for ways it can be improved. Thank you in advance for taking a look and letting us know what you think.
