Social media is about to be disrupted. To Be Honest is the next viral App

If you are interested in the future of social media, here is a story for you. The tbh app is showing viral potential like we haven't seen in a long time, read on.

According to App Annie, the roll-out in select U.S. states is proving tbh is a winner. It already has 2 million users, and has only been released in fourteen U.S. states thus far.

Anonymous apps have typically failed to scale as they often lead down a spiral of bullying, threats or worse yet, racism.

However, a new generation of positive feedback apps promises to change that for teens and young people.

Read the FAQ. This isn't Whisper or Sarahah, this is designed for positive feedback.

Is a positive anonymous feedback app even possible?

It's not by chance that the community video meme on LinkedIn is called #LetsGetHonest, while #tbh is a popular way teens give complements on Instagram.

  • Teens send each other compliments anonymously
  • TBH is only for users in grades 9 and up.
  • Early tests are showing enormous potential for virality of this model
  • This isn't the spiritual successor of Yik Yak or Secret, it's something far more life-empowering

Fakeness vs. Honesty and the social validation of the attention economy

tbh, see who likes you.

The first few years of the web have motivated teens to compare themselves to their friends and acquaintances, or to "show off" with our self-centred experiences on apps such as Instagram or Snapchat. What if there was a better way for the mental health of our teens?

  • tbh, gets rid of typing.
  • Tapping into questions and surveys that are social, is highly addictive
  • We are hard-wired to admire others, and not only to help them but to support and nurture their growth.
  • Can a pro-social app go viral?

How it Works

Firstly, you upload your contacts and immediately you’re answering multiple-choice questions where a random four friends are the answers.

In line with the future of voice SEO

Since Voice-search is on the rise (accounts for 20% of searches according to Google), questions are the key to local and network search in the future. The SEO of voice takes typing out of the equation, bringing a new ecosystem of the attention economy to the foreground.

The next milestone is thinking about social platforms in terms of love and positivity. - TBH team.

While empires such as Facebook/Instagram appealed to our narcissism, desire for attention, a sometimes disconnected voyeurism of others and a personal brand that was fundamentally damaging for the self-concept of teens, could it be the next era of apps will be more pro-social?

It is possible that GenZ sees through the glamour and fakeness and has a true desire for genuine anonymous feedback that's life-affirming, funny and gamifies "being nice"?

I think what you are talking about is a great evolution process - a positive one. Only time will tell if it actually works. Thanks for sharing these wonderful insights:)

Each solution brings a new problem, and each problem triggers a new solution. I think the main question is: "How can humans adapt themselves to responding at light speed? By developing new tools, or by changing themselves?"

Let's get honest, sometime the truth isn't pretty and to live a life of integrity we need to awake to that fact. Apps that only compliment cannot completely enlighten. Nor can those that devolve to bullying. What problem are these apps trying to solve? Can't personal honest in-person communication do this? Is it efficiency? Productivity? Time? Is Awareness such a commodity?
