Social Isolation, Depression, Violence…
Social Isolation, Depression, Young Adult Violence…
Can we find ways to keep our young adults, our future, meaningful jobs, and reassuring physical and spiritual activities?? We must, or our humanity will suffer immensely and fall deeper into chaos. God help us to save our young adults and our future.
Are we in an era of living a life of quiet desperation…?????Economic hardship, loss of self-respect, and loss of value for human dignity seem to ooze out of this pandemic, recession, and uncertain existence...? Social isolation and depression... ?“A major adverse consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to be increased social isolation and loneliness.”?(Jabob Sweet, 1-2021). ? Recessions and feelings of hopelessness loom over our young adults, more so... Indeed, our young adults are hardest hit by loneliness during pandemics…? So, does the social isolation and isolation in young adults lead to violence? Many questions. “The association between violence exposure and loneliness is a really interesting one, because there’s such a strong link,” according to recent research.? And, “The pervasiveness of violence seems to be more evident now than ever. What does that sense of violence in our culture do more broadly to loneliness?”? Well, we inseminate a culture in which self, independence, autonomy, and stoicism are valued at the expense of relationships, community, and vulnerability. Pandemic and recession have heightened the sense of young adult idleness, loneliness, and social isolation. It cannot be good. We must find ways to help our young people, and help ourselves.
Many find that one common strain of dark characteristics of mass shooters:?Social Isolation.?Disconnect from human relations…?
Youth violence has so many causes, preventing it also requires a multifaceted approach, according to The Center for Gun Violence Solutions.??Many of the solutions are well-known, if not often implemented, such as?strengthening families, minimizing violent media effects, reducing youth access to guns, and improving school climates.? The good news is violence is preventable and we can all help young people grow up violence-free.? Keeping young people productive in meaningful endeavors that instill self-worth and meaning would definitely help.? Family, school, police, and government, all have to invest in these young lives.?This is our future.
1.????Social Isolation.????? Social isolation increases aggression that leads to mass shootings according to Dr. Andrew Huberman.? Social isolation is a state of complete or near-complete lack of contact between an individual and society. Well, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the implementation of unprecedented “social distancing” strategies crucial to limiting the spread of the virus. However, there is a high cost associated with the essential quarantine and social distancing interventions for COVID-19, many young adults, have experienced an acute, severe sense of social isolation and loneliness with potentially serious mental and physical health consequences. The impact may be disproportionately amplified in those with pre-existing mental illness, who are often suffering from loneliness and social isolation prior to the enhanced distancing from others imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic public health measures.
2.?????Loneliness and killing.???????????? Example: The night before he killed himself and six other people, one of whom he stabbed 94 times, 22-year-old Elliot Rodgers said into his cell phone: “Tomorrow is the day of retribution. The day in which I will have my revenge?against humanity, against all of you because for the last eight years of my life…I have been forced to endure an existence of?loneliness…?I’ve had to rot in bleak and sad loneliness all these years.”?Is this an isolated incident or a growing dark trend…?? The evidence of young adult violence is evident in recent times... Many bullied, socially isolated, depressed young people tend to value less of themselves and others.
3.?????Solution to Loneliness and Violence????????? We must preserve our young adults. They are our future. So, part of our healing must be the conviction that we will do everything in our power to keep these tragedies from happening in a nation that continues to face a pandemic of gun violence. It's not only the high-profile mass shootings that we must work to prevent but also the daily death-by-guns that claim more than 30,000 lives every year.???Encourage young adults to participate in exercising, eating healthy, getting enough sleep (7 to 9 hours), and pursuing activities they enjoy to help manage stress and stay as mentally and physically healthy as possible. Share this infographic and help spread the word about staying connected to combat loneliness and social isolation.
Here are some recommendations (But there are many more): Parents, friends, schools, churches, police, and social agencies must be trained to identify and correct signs of loneliness in young adults including (not limited to):?1)Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, 2) Little to no connection with others, especially in-person, 3) Decrease in motivation for self-improvement, 4) Increase in self-criticism?and ridicule, 5) Feeling socially awkward?or insecure, 6) Increase in anxiety during social situations, 7) Lacking a sense of belonging to a group, and 8) Feeling like you’re a burden or that no one understands you.
