Social Impact of AI: Should We Worry or Welcome AI in 2024?

Social Impact of AI: Should We Worry or Welcome AI in 2024?

Welcome, of course I welcome.

"2024 will be epic; we are riding the vertical part of the exponential curve, and every year from now on will be state-of-the-art by far." - Dr. Jim Fan, NVIDIA senior research scientist

Picture this: personalized AI chatbot assistants seamlessly integrated into your daily life. These intelligent companions will not only understand your specific needs but also adapt to your unique communication style. Whether managing your calendar, handling emails, or booking flights, your AI assistant will become an indispensable part of your routine, making everyday tasks a breeze.

This AI function was also mentioned by Zack Kass at MDX 2023, The Malaysia Digital Expo 2023 (MDX 2023) was a six-week long empowerment platform that brings together the very best of Malaysia’s digital economy to be on this massive ‘Show and Tell’ extravaganza.

The question now is - do humans get lazier over time, with the help of AI?

AI has the capacity to enhance convenience and efficiency in various tasks, yet its overarching influence may lead to a decline in problem-solving skills and creativity. AI might inadvertently encourage sedentary lifestyles by diminishing the need for self-motivation. Dependence on machines has the potential to erode self-reliance and hinder skill development. Striking a balance between AI and human effort is imperative for a harmonious future. Furthermore, reforming education is essential to address potential job displacement.

The pervasive influence of AI is transforming our world, revolutionizing our interaction with technology. However, this technological progress brings along ethical concerns and societal implications. Critics raise valid points, suggesting that if machines surpass human intelligence, it could lead to job displacement and economic upheaval. Ethical programming of AI to avoid biases or discrimination becomes a pressing question.

While AI brings unparalleled convenience and efficiency, it also raises concerns about its social impact, particularly in areas such as critical thinking, job displacement, and ethical considerations.

A noticeable trend among younger generations is the diminishing ability to think critically and creatively. As AI takes over mundane tasks, there is a growing concern that reliance on technology may hinder personal growth and skill development. Striking a balance between AI and human effort is crucial to ensure a future where humans collaborate with machines rather than being entirely replaced by them.

To mitigate the risks associated with AI, education reform is necessary. Prioritizing reskilling and upskilling programs can equip the workforce with skills that complement AI rather than competing with it. The focus should be on preparing individuals for roles that require creativity, empathy, and critical thinking qualities that AI currently cannot fully replicate.

AI is revolutionizing industries, automating tasks, and enhancing convenience, while also posing challenges such as job displacement, ethical dilemmas, and potential over-reliance leading to mental stagnation. It is crucial to recognize that AI is intended to augment human capabilities, not replace them entirely.

There's one question remains unanswered: when should we initiate AI education for our children, at the age of 8 or perhaps before they turn 15? The absence of a unified educational approach or global guidelines exacerbates the urgency.

Should we consider implementing a standardized test to assess children's comprehension of AI concepts? Equally pressing is the need for children to grasp the risks and implications of this technology. What should be taught, when to commence, and how to effectively integrate AI education into our children's learning journeys?

"I know I'm wrong; but how am I wrong, and how wrong am I?" - Prof. Lee Cronin, Digital Chemistry, University of Glasgow

Will our children retain the ability to continuously question themselves and seek answers independently, or are we on the verge of a future where they turn to AI for solutions to every conceivable question?

The social impact of AI in 2024 is a complex tapestry of promise and peril. While the conveniences and efficiencies it brings are undeniable, the potential pitfalls necessitate a cautious and considerate approach. As we stand at this crossroads, the choice between worry and welcome hinges on our ability to harness the power of AI responsibly, ethically, and in harmony with our shared human values.
