Social is Social!

Social is Social!

If you like to blog, you gotta love LinkedIn. I posted seven things to “get” about social. Little did I know how much more there was!

Rob Tarkoff

President and CEO at Lithium Technologies

Social is innovative. Many of our customers find that tapping into the innovation of their best customers (at massive scale) can produce incredibly unique insights for product development. Plus it already has the benefit of being "sponsored" by your best advocates before you release it!

Raam Venkatesan

Head of Partnerships, Business development and Strategy

Social is also "Purpose driven" if that phrase can be used. This means, that any contribution is because of a sense of attachment to a particular purpose. Without this there might not be any voluntary contributions.

Alex Wolin

Head of Enterprise East, LinkedIn Sales Solutions

Social as 'practical,' too. 75% of execs use social networks to research products (according to IDC). So execs not on social have an opportunity to join conversations that matter. Thanks

Great points. I'd add "Social is Inevitable". After all, it's just another form of communication like the phone and email. We're waaay past predicting it is a fad. I mean, LinkedIn is a teenager and Facebook is not far behind. Marketing Depts. got Social 6-8 years ago. Sales Depts.are doing it right now. Can the Accounting Dept. be far behind?....actually, it is, but they'll get there...it's inevitable.

I'd add Social is humanizing. Social Networks like LinkedIn and Twitter give us the ability to understand someone's identity (their skills, where they've worked, where they went to University, where they live), their relationships (to whom they're connected, what groups they're a member of, who they follow and are followed by), and their interests (what they care about, what makes them tick). The ROI (risk of ignoring) Social is massive. By 2025, 75% of the world's workforce will be Millennials (Gen Y), which in 2015 became the largest generation in the workforce, surpassing Gen X, Baby Boomers, and Silent. Gen Z started entering the workforce in 2016. They were born digital and social, with nearly unlimited real-time 24/7 one swipe away access to information and people. Social Networks can be used to find, listen, relate, connect, engage, and amplify people, information, ideas. Being active in Social Networks can lead to being found. Every day we become more digitally-driven, socially connected, mobile, and empowered. We trust people more than we trust brands, logos, and scripted marketing messages. We trust people like us. We trust people who are credible. We trust people who are empathetic. We trust people who can deliver value. We trust people who are transparent and authentic. We trust people who care. Thanks for sharing your fabulous insights Geoffrey Moore!! I trust you!

I'd add at least one "Not". Social is not designed as a new medium for traditional promotional approaches. When you use social without respecting your seven, its breaks down and causes frustration and anger.

Very good point Jenna -- "Social" is indeed just a tool, albeit an important one. And as we know, tools can be used or mis-used -- therein lies the challenge ! ... Michael

Excellent post-Geoffrey Moore. I quite agree with you, Michael Willis. While the Arts plays out or reflects society, Socials direct it...

Social is educational. It is a way to efficiently inform a great many people on topics important to them, the society in which they live, and the world in which we all live.
