This is certainly a worthwhile goal. However, what are schools willing to give up (timewise) to make this happen? The only way feasible, is to make it part and parcel of all curricula. In other words, SEL must be on everyone’s agenda. We must test for it on exams like all Statewide NYS Regents tests. If we agree that being social, having emotional control, and knowing how to be nice and affable is important for Mental Health then we must ALL learn how to teach this. We might learn something ourselves we can use at home, at work, at play, and beyond. This is bigger than Health class in 8th grade one week and in 10th grade Health class for a few days. How many suicides and tragedies will it take for us to demand that the establishment make this change.
