Social Distancing Doesn’t Mean Self-Isolating

It’s more important than ever to stay connected – for you and your network!

While social distancing saves lives, how we do it matters. Venturing out to the grocery store, I noticed empty playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts without nets, and deserted beaches along Lake Michigan. The lack of social interaction is challenging for all of us, but for some it’s even more difficult. Think of parents who have kids on the autism spectrum or others who suffer from depression or anxiety. The daily stress of being cooped up in their homes adds another level of struggle.

While we physically separate, we need to ensure that we’re not emotionally disconnecting from our community. For your overall well-being, stay safe by social distancing but not self-isolating. It’s OK to ask for help, and critical to check-in with those who might need extra support. There are many resources we can take advantage of—from Zoom meetings to texting to an old-fashioned phone call. Here are a few articles about how to stay connected. I was particularly inspired by the creative way Seattle residents are reaching out at a safe distance. Got a creative idea on how to practice social distancing without self-isolating? Share it with me on Linkedin or Facebook.

Carlos, thanks for sharing this important information. My family and I have have a weekly Zoom call. It's been great to see each other and stay connected. There are usually 3-4 generations represented on the call.
