Soaring Above Self-Doubt: The Art of Looking Forward in Business

Soaring Above Self-Doubt: The Art of Looking Forward in Business

"As soon as something goes right, I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop... and it usually does," said my client, Diana, as we dove into our latest coaching session. This mindset of expecting failure even after success and focusing on past mistakes is something many entrepreneurs struggle with. It can be a significant roadblock to achieving consistent growth.

"Didn't you recently go skydiving?" I asked her, recalling a story she had shared with me. "You weren’t afraid to take that risk, were you?"

She paused, then laughed. "No, I wasn’t. I just jumped, and it was exhilarating!"

"Exactly," I said, leaning into the metaphor. "When you were free-falling, were you thinking about the plane you just left, or were you focused on the view ahead and the landing?"

"I was totally focused on the landscape below, taking in everything as I fell," she admitted.

"So why do you keep looking back at the ‘plane’ in your business and life?" I asked her pointedly.

You can’t move forward if you’re always worried about what’s behind you.

"The person who jumped out of that plane wasn’t concerned about what she left behind; she was all about the future." I reminded her.

?Diana’s struggle to maintain this forward-focused mindset in her business became clear as we delved deeper into her thoughts.

"Every time I achieve something, like buying a new condo, I can’t just enjoy it. My mind goes straight to, 'But what if I lose it?'" she said.

This pattern of habitual negative thinking was not only undermining her accomplishments but also preventing her from taking bold steps forward in her business.

It was like pulling herself out of the sky and grounding her before she could even spread her wings.

I encouraged her to adopt a new identity in her business. “If you were to give yourself a name for this person that jumped out of the plane, what would it be? I asked Diana. “I’d call her "Daring Diva," she replied smiling.

"The Daring Diva doesn’t hesitate. She takes risks and trusts that she’ll figure it out along the way," I explained.

"When she jumps, she’s not looking back at the plane; she’s adjusting her parachute and preparing for a smooth landing. Do you think you could hire Daring Diva to run your business?"

Diana began to see the power of this new approach but it was clear that fully embracing the Daring Diva mindset would require a shift in how she viewed her past experiences and future possibilities.

"What if everything you touch could turn into success?" I asked her.

What if you could train your brain to focus only on what’s working well and discard the fear of failure?

She hesitated for a moment before responding, "That would be amazing, but it’s hard for me to shut down the negative thoughts."

"It’s not about shutting them down," I clarified. "It’s about overriding them."

"You need to create a new mental program that says, 'Everything I do is successful.' And when something doesn’t go as planned, it’s not a reflection of your abilities - it’s just an opportunity to tweak and adjust, like steering the lines of your parachute to guide your descent. Just as you maneuver the cords to ensure a smooth landing, you can make small adjustments in business to steer it toward success."

By the end of our session, Diana was starting to see how she could bring the Daring Diva into her business life.

"I love your idea of asking myself, ‘What would the Daring Diva do?’" she said with a smile. "She would look at what’s ahead, not what’s behind."

"Exactly," I agreed.

It’s about figuring out what moves on that parachute will give you the best landing, because in business and life, it’s all about forward momentum.

Imagine you’re planning to implement a new lead generation strategy with social media ads. Let’s say you tried running ads on TikTok before, but they didn’t produce the results you were hoping for. Now, what will you do this time?
