Soap making in The Congo
Friendly Soap - Thanks for your donation to the Quaker Congo Partnership UK (QCP) project. This helped to teach soap making to disadvantaged women in the village of Abeku in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DCR). Using donations from ethical soap-makers in the UK, some 20 women were trained for a week in soap-making. Everybody loved the training, and gained a range of skills.?
They made incredibly good use of the soap they made. Some soap went home with them and helped up to 100 people in their extended families to wash their hands during Covid. Some was sold and the profit of about £120 was ploughed back into the project. And some was donated to people in even greater need than themselves - disabled and elderly neighbours and children with no adult carers.
DRC is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the district we work in is one of the poorest in the country.?So, your donation really did go a long way.?
What is very encouraging is that the local women came up with this project themselves, so it's realistically rooted in their local economy.?
