Did you click because of the "hot emails near you"? It's a valid way to grab attention, on LinkedIn and in emails.
Email is a great method of marketing (ignoring the hundreds of unread emails everyone has), if you do it well. It's a cost-effective way to reach your audience, build relationships, and grow your business. Email marketing is a direct marketing form that utilizes email to promote products/brands. It can be used to direct traffic to blogs, websites, downloadable content, social media channels, really anywhere you want the customer to follow. Not to mention it can be done super easily if using marketing automation. Just like it sounds, those boring and repetitive tasks (like writing emails) can be automated (in a way).
Services like MailChimp and Constant Contact have features (automation, A/B testing, templates, analytics) that make it even easier to design, send, and track email campaigns like the example above. Automation tools can be used to track customer behavior, allowing the broad list of subscribers to be segmented further based on interests and actions taken. Knowing how to make use of available tools makes you that much more efficient and effective.
