I do a lot of networking on LinkedIn and just yesterday happened to have a conversation with an individual that went a little something like this...
Me:
"So tell me more about your consulting business. Who would be your ideal client?"
Response:
"One who sees and respects the value of my services. I work with all types of industries and projects. I work with all stages of business development, create business plans, pitch projects to investors and manage accounts, PR, Advertising, Social Media and so much more!"
Me:
"So a jack of all trades?"
Response:
"Exactly!"
How long did it take you to read the above?
That's exactly the same time it took me realize that this person wasn't really a specialist or expert in anything and that they were trying to be everything to everyone.
The result?
You wind up being nothing no anyone...
When I have a problem I need to solve, I hire someone who's an expert at solving that problem.
If you're going in for a boob job, are you going to your primary care doctor or a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation?
Fellas, if you're going in for knee surgery, are you hiring the doc who you get your physicals done with or are you hiring a knee surgeon?
There's the point.
The world is filled with generalists out there and quite frankly, I don't think we need anymore of them.
The biggest problem most of us have when finding clients is one of quality not quantity.
We try to compensate for this by adding more clients to our roster but we all know this can be a disaster if those clients aren't the right fit.
It can wind up costing us thousands of dollars in the long run.
Another example of how branding is directly impacting your bottom line.
If you want to charge more for your services, attract higher quality clients and provide higher caliber results to your clients so that they keep coming back for me and at the same time tell all their friends about you, then it might be time to get your brand checked out by the doc.
