So You Want to be a Rock Star Entrepreneur? Stop Making Excuses and Buying into the Myths

"If it's important you'll find a way.  If it's not, you'll find an excuse." - Ryan Blair

Too many people who set out to start their own business quit too soon.  It's usually because they let one or more of the following excuses get in the way.  Excuses create scarce thoughts resulting in self-doubt.  Sound familiar?  Perhaps by reading these common excuses you will create self-awareness and can get back to becoming a rock star.

  1. A job would be easier - Not necessarily.  Working for someone else can be tough and require just as much if not more tenacity than building a business.  Remember why you wanted to become an entrepreneur in the first place.  I am almost certain it wasn't because you thought you would be hitting the easy button everyday but more likely because you wanted flexibility, the ability to bring your own ideas to fruition and to be your own boss.
  2. I don't have enough time - Did you have enough time when you had a job?  Probably not.  We all have the same amount of time yet we never have enough time.  There are 24 hours in a day no matter how you slice it.  If it's important enough to you, you will prioritize your time.
  3. I am not able to make the money I used to - Maybe not as quick as you would like to but you can make 10x more than you used to.  There are no caps when you are an entrepreneur.  You just have to work hard for it and give your pipeline time to build.  Rome wasn't built in a day!
  4. I am not cut out for entrepreneurship -  Perhaps you are experiencing a set back.  A setback is a set up for your future success.  Building an enterprise is like riding a roller coaster.  Darren Hardy describes this well in his book in The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster.  If you still don't think you have what it takes, get better.  Successful entrepreneurs are committed to constant and never ending improvement.
  5. I'll be able to provide more stability to my family if I get a job - How do you define stability?  If it's financial it is true that a job can provide a consistent paycheck, that is until they decide the position isn't needed or technology or the next generation replaces you.  If stability means spending more time with your family, being home for your kids after school, travelling less and controlling your own schedule it is unlikely that a job will provide you with that flexibility.
  6. No one is buying what I am selling - Then stop selling, build relationships and perfect your value proposition.  Stop rushing the sale out of desperation and speed up the sales cycle by providing value.  Value is not only in the product or service; it is in the relationship.   Shift your mindset and help others make good "buying decisions."
  7. I've never done this before - You never walked before you started walking either.  There is always a learning curve to anything new that you do.  Be curious and ask for help.  There are plenty of mentors, teachers and coaches out there who you can learn from and who have had success before you.  What distinguishes average entrepreneurs from rock star entrepreneurs is their willingness to get rid of their I Know, ask for help, and be vulnerable.

It's not easy being an entrepreneur much less a rock star!  I'm pretty sure no one ever said it was easy either.  It's hard work and the rewards whether financial, time or idea driven are extraordinary which is why you started your business in the first place.  So, keep on keeping on, ride the roller coaster and remember if you can't get your mojo back Start with Why you ever made the leap.
