So you want to make a video.

So you want to make a video.

We produced this short document to help guide clients in their decision process when they want to make content. Happy to share and if you want more help just get in touch.

Before we start on your video we need to have some basic things in place prior to picking up the camera to start shooting. If we don't, there could be a waste of time and money. We also need to ensure we have a backup plan or schedule in the event things don't go smoothly.

We need to understand your concept and buy into it so that we become as passionate about it as you are! These questions will clarify exactly what you’re looking for and get us both on the same page.

We have other questions that we will be asking as we develop the brief with you, and we will be going through a technical appraisal during the editing – but these 5 questions will get us started.

1. What’s the purpose of your video?

What is the purpose of your video? (tick all the appropriate boxes)

o Campaign content (eg, Product launch, Mid-term refresh, Brand refresh, etc)

o Corporate messaging (Annual General Meeting, Sales, Staff recruitment, etc)

o Training

o Social media communications (short form content for Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn,

etc)

o Is there a particular problem you’re trying to solve for your brand, products or staff?

2. Who do you want to see this video?

How and where will they see it?

Is the video for Mobile, Desktop, Outdoor, In-Flight, Cinema…

o Describe your audience (include your demograhic / psychographic)

o What does the audience know about you and your brand already?

o What countries do you want to cover, and what languages do we need to include?

o Will we need to dub the video or do you want subtitles?

o Do you have a presenter or a narrator in mind? Should they be Female or Male?

3. Is there content your video needs to include?

Is there content and support you want to bring to the table?

o Partners and contributors

o Celebrites or experienced staff for narration, voice over or as a presenter. (Your CEO goes here!)

o Existing archive footage

o Brand guidelines and graphical content (logos, fonts, colors etc)

o Will we need to travel to various locations to film?

4. What style would you like it to have?

o Have you been inspired by a particular video you’ve seen elsewhere?

o Do you want the video to be like a documentary?

o Would you like talking heads?

o Maybe you want to create something impressively cinematic.

o What duration should the video run for?

If you can draw on examples of videos that use styles that you are aspiring to, it would be really useful to share them with us. Youtube is very useful for researching these.

5. What is your budget, and when is your deadline? It helps if you can share with us how much you want to spend, and how fast you need the content.

The budget will help us to manage your expectations. A minute of video can cost as little as

$2000 if it’s a dog on a skateboard (we have to hire a talented dog!), on the other hand Avatar cost $2,000,000 per minute…

Let’s discuss how we can maximise your results based on the budget.

Happy to talk.
