So You Want to Build an Enterprise VR/AR Solution? Given Our Experience with Clients, Here are Four Must-Haves Before You Start

So you want to build an Enterprise Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) solution?  Something that is going to be bought millions of times (or more!) and that is going to get rave reviews worldwide, and open up a completely new category in your product line/revenue stream?  

That’s awesome!

Given our experience with clients over the last year, here are four things that you really should have before you commence on this journey:

  1. Compelling Use Case/Scenario.  Your VR/AR app/solution should be both captivating / inspiring as well as need-to-have - otherwise why would someone buy it?
  2. Clear Decisions on Which Platform, Devices and Interfaces to Use.  Since VR/AR equipment and software is all still first-generation, and we see them changing/improving on a quarterly basis (or faster), you really should have a clear analysis on which technologies to use and why (what are the trade-offs: what you get and don’t get with your choices).
  3. Rock-Solid Business Case.  If you build a VR/AR solution and there is no revenue payoff or cost reduction for your paying customer, given our client experience over the last year, it likely won’t get funded and likely won’t succeed.  Having a business case/justification is required.
  4. First-Mover Advantage.  If you have a distinct first-mover advantage with/for your VR/AR app/solution, along with a strong business case, we have seen these VR/AR ideas rocket to the front of the line in terms of priority, funding and resources.  Without both, we have seen quite a few VR/AR ideas go to the grave.
