So You Want To Bring People Along With? You

You want to bring people along with you, but you hate the idea of dumbing your message down. People can follow you, or they can follow the proles. History will vindicate you and show how brilliant you were.
Maybe you’re right, maybe you’re wrong.
But you won’t have any say in that once you’ve moved on.
Right now, you do.
Consider that “staying smart” and refusing to dumb things down is the easy road. It saves you from having to empathize. It saves you from having to get outside of your ivory tower and do the hard work of connecting with another human being.
Being responsible for what you have to say landing with the other side — that’s your edge.
Why not act while you have the power to do so?

5 年You must meet people where they are. Some things are a factor of timing, as in their emotional readiness to receive or change. But to miss an opportunity for a meeting of the minds because you (wrongfully) believed simplifying your message or your teaching somehow diluted its value is misguided. It takes advanced thinking and intelligence to simplify the complex and reduce ideas to the essentials for understanding a concept. It takes longer to produce less, but that less is worth so much more. Try it and experience the difference for yourself. You'll be glad you did. I promise!

5 年This resonates with me so much. Especially with the language I used to use to describe my courses, and the way I talk about the kind of results they might get in my promotional materials. GUITLY! I mean my second Module is called: "Personal Sovereignty"! And the course is called "Kickstart Your Mini Empire"!!! So I have some strategic thinking to do around how best to use my audience's language and, not 'dumb' it down, but make it more accessible conceptually and experientially. That's our job as teachers. Thank you for this timely prompt.

5 年I see this a lot with the members of our community. And... I've experienced this for myself, too. It's easy to use intellectual integrity as an excuse for not making your work more consumable. But then we end up wondering why more people don't use it and why we aren't more recognized as the pioneering leaders we'd like to be.? The real work is in making something that is in integrity with your highest work AND able to be used by the people who need it most.
