So You Wanna Be a Content Creator? Here’s the Deal…
Johnie Lewis Tidwell, Jr.
"I help advertisers, brands & celebrities create powerful content and original IPs that skyrocket brand awareness and leave a lasting impact."
Let’s be real—you don’t need a fancy camera, a team, or some "expert-level" skill to start creating. You just need to start. Right now. Not later. Not "when I get better." Not after watching 20 more tutorials on YouTube (we’ve all been there).
Because here’s the truth no one tells you: every creator you admire was once terrible. Their first videos? Cringe. Their first posts? Embarrassing. Their first attempts? Barely worth remembering.
But they kept going. And that’s the difference.
1. Pick a Platform & Own Your Lane
People get stuck here. Paralysis by overthinking. Should I do YouTube? TikTok? Instagram? A blog? Maybe a podcast? The answer: just pick one—the one that feels the most natural right now. You can always expand later.
?? Video? TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels—pick your poison. ?? Writing? X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Medium, even a damn Tumblr if you’re feeling nostalgic. ?? Audio? Podcasting is easier than you think (Spotify’s Anchor is free). ?? Visuals? Instagram, Pinterest—Canva can make you look like a designer even if you have zero skills.
And if you’re stuck? Flip a coin. Seriously. Because action beats indecision every time.
2. Create First. Fix Later.
Your first pieces of content? They’ll suck. That’s not an insult—it’s reality. You don’t get good by thinking about it. You get good by doing it badly until you don’t.
?? Just post. Doesn’t matter if it’s awkward. It will be. ?? Use what you have. No one cares if your lighting is perfect. ?? Don’t delete your early stuff—you’ll want to see how far you’ve come.
And let’s be honest: no one is watching you at the start anyway. There is no “pressure.” You’re invisible. Which, ironically, is the best time to experiment, screw up, and learn without the world judging you.
3. Engage, Don’t Just Exist
Here’s where most people mess up. They post. Then they sit. Refreshing their stats like the numbers will change reality. Spoiler: they won’t.
You have to engage.
?? Comment on other people’s posts—the fastest way to get noticed is to be visible. ?? Stitch, duet, remix trending content—it’s like hacking attention. ?? Ask questions, start discussions, actually talk to people—you know, be human.
Content isn’t just what you post—it’s how you interact. The algorithm? It loves engagement.
4. Post Like You Mean It (And Often)
Inconsistency kills creators. You post once. Maybe twice. Then life gets in the way, you overthink, and suddenly it’s been a month. Momentum gone.
Look—you don’t need to post daily, but you need to post regularly.
? Batch-create content so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. ? Use analytics to see what’s working (but don’t obsess over it). ? Done is better than perfect. Always.
And if you feel like no one’s watching? Good. That means you’re in your practice phase. Keep going.
5. Make Money Faster Than You Think
You don’t need millions of followers to get paid. You need strategy.
?? Affiliate links—get paid for stuff you’d recommend anyway. ?? Brand deals—yes, even small creators can get these (pitch yourself). ?? Ad revenue—YouTube, blogs, TikTok… all of them pay eventually. ?? Sell something—templates, guides, courses, even a Notion doc. ?? Freelancing—if you have a skill, someone out there will pay for it.
Stop thinking, "I’ll make money when I get big." You can start now. Small wins stack.
6. Just. Start. Now.
The biggest difference between someone who’s a creator and someone who wants to be? One presses publish. The other doesn’t.
Most people will read this, nod, and do nothing. Some will read this, take a deep breath, and finally start.
Which one are you?
