So You Think You’ve Arrived?

So You Think You’ve Arrived?

Recently, someone ran into me at the airport and said something that stuck with me:

“I’m so impressed that, at your age, you keep pushing yourself to learn more.”

I smiled because they weren’t just commenting on my age, but on my refusal to settle into the comfort zone.

As leaders, it’s easy to think we’ve “arrived” after years of experience and success. The comfort zone becomes tempting. But the truth is, ‘growth doesn’t live in comfort.’ The moment we stop pushing ourselves, we stop evolving.

That’s why I’m here in South Africa, attending the ‘Impact Investing in Africa Programme’ at the Bertha Centre for Innovation, University of Cape Town, Graduate School of Business.

My working group- bonding outside class at dinner time and it’s only day 2.

This week, I’ve embraced the unknown in several ways. I’ve been exposed to leaders from various sectors and countries, including South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, the UK, and Uganda—each bringing unique ideas and solutions for Africa’s future.

For me, this isn’t just about learning the material; it’s about asking bigger questions and seeking out perspectives that challenge my thinking. I came to this program with the intention of expanding not just my knowledge, but my network across Africa, and already, these new connections are helping me see possibilities I hadn’t considered before.

Stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary for growth. Here are two steps you can take to break out of your own comfort zone:

1. Ask Bigger Questions!

Instead of asking, “What’s working?” ask, “What’s possible?” Push yourself to explore new avenues, to think beyond the immediate. Bigger questions will always lead to bigger possibilities, just as they have for me during this program. And if you’re an entrepreneur, instead of asking, “How can we maintain what we’ve built?” ask, “What’s next for us? How can we break new ground?” Growth starts with the courage to think bigger.

2. Embrace the Unknown!

Step out of your regular circles and routines. Instead of staying with the familiar, join new conversations or groups that force you to learn something different. If you’re an entrepreneur, take on projects or opportunities that force you to learn something new. It might be uncomfortable at first, but that discomfort is a sign that you’re stretching. Whether it’s pursuing a new skill or entering a different market, embrace the unfamiliar. As I’m experiencing here in South Africa, the unknown is where growth happens.

This Strategic September, challenge yourself to break out of the comfort zone.

Ask yourself: What new questions or experiences will help me grow?

The future belongs to those who keep pushing boundaries and evolving.

So, will you dare to lead beyond your comfort zone?
