So you think you understand performance?

So you think you understand performance?

Over the next three newsletters, I want to help you feel more ready to perform at work. To kick things off, let's start by understanding what "performance" really means. It's a word thrown around a lot in the workplace, and it probably means something different to everyone.

Typically, when I talk to people about the word performance, they say it's the results we achieve, the numbers we hit, what's on the scoreboard. In the world of work people seem to spend a lot of time talking about the results rather than spending energy on getting better at the things that will improve what’s on the scoreboard.

At PlanetK2 we have a very different definition of the word performance.

"Performance is not the same as results."

Performance for us is "doing the things you need to do to get the results you want." When you focus on the performance as to opposed to the results you feel a greater sense of control, you are more ready for changing conditions and you maintain confidence as you can identify factors that contribute to your strengths.

Now I’m not saying that results don’t matter. Of course they do, that’s why organisations and people obsess over them. The only problem is that, on its own, it’s not a useful obsession. Therefore, knowing the result you’re aiming for is important and it’s even more important to understand and be passionate about how to get it.

"It's because we think results are important that we want people to enjoy the power of performance"

Before we dive into your recipe for success and the ingredients that will help you feel more ready to perform, I want to challenge you over the next month to become really great at talking about performance. Here are 3 things you can start doing:

  1. Start talking about performance as performance. Not results. Take the lead on this and start to ask whether people around you are talking about performance or results. Just doing this can have a massive impact!
  2. Lay the foundations with others. If you’re going to start having effective performance conversations with others, make sure you have a shared language and understanding. Don’t just assume you have
  3. Check in with your mindset. Is it in the right place to start having useful performance focused conversations? If it’s not, then change it.

Hi my names Leigh just like to talk a little bit bout performance. I strongly believe that yes while performance is great to me its what lies underneath that drive to perform in and particular area of expertise is really the highlight here and what should stand out and be show cased. I believe that Mindset has everything to do with that driving force that pushes you to learn grow fail get up and try again till you achieve what your desires are. If you really take the time to listen to your inner knowing you can find what your looking for. Hope this resonates out there thanks.

Ah, a link to how our brain works... 'Why' behind our thoughts > 'How' behaviors become part of daily performance > 'What' outcomes/ results we achieve. Thanks Adam Morris. IDEA...
