So what is LinkedIn for anyway?

I love making a difference and positively impacting peoples lives through effective career coaching and job search training workshops. Challenges are just opportunities to get stronger. "The obstacle is the way".
Here I am almost 9 years as a member of one of the largest social networks in the world. I am professional, I have many connections. I don't spam. I approach all potential business connections with respect and do not offer to connect with just anyone. I reply to e-mails and offer assistance to anyone of my over 5000 connections when-ever I reach out with any communication.
Over the last few weeks I have sent out about a 3-5 e-mails a day asking people in my immediate network for assistance with a specific business question. I am not being pushy and I am providing enough information so that people understand my question, but I rarely get a response. There are some responses but based on the numbers only 1-2% respond.
That's like walking around a networking event with people from your industry who know who you are and only 1 or 2 people out of the hundreds actually shake your hand. Isn't LinkedIn a social network where business people connect? Is this media over used, or have we abused this media to the point that people just see it as more of the white noise in their e-mail?
I get more response from picking up the phone and connecting the "old fashioned" way. What are your thoughts?

9 年Interesting social experiment David. I am disappointed that the results weren't different. I have not conducted a formal experiment in the same way but I have reached out to connections in a similar way and have had different results. Mind you, most of my connections are friends and colleagues that I know or have known reasonably well in my professional life.

9 年Now that we live in #InformationAge, we cant control the amount of information that is getting created, distributed and consumed.... though we can definitely put "filters" on and leverage these "tools" (social media, internet) for same reason as the #entrepreneurs of these Information Age businesses use... to add more #Value to people's life (users= customers in "cloud") and build "Social Business Networks", like i said next step is #innovation on top of these Information age businesses ..... Just my 2cents. PS: notice the use of words "trust" and "friend" in online world is because this remains one of the biggest challenge in digital world.
AGREED 200% !!!! Feels good to see people like DAVID speaking own mind, my all encouragement to bravehearts' as such! I've always believed and till date follow, "old-fashioned" ideology, that relations are NEVER to be built with the PURPOSE OF BUSINESS OR PERSONAL GAIN in future! Should they be established not much would materialize and even if it does then it would only be temporary!! It is time for 'LinkedIn' to categorize professionals based on Industry the way they did for Recruiters. Else I find this platform as the best area to exploit for "Salesmen". Accept my apologies if overstated! Feel free and / or absolutely non-hesitant to counsel me!!!
