So What Is Board of the World?

I am going to start with the takeaway of this article:
Make time for a project that pays you in energy and knowledge. It will become the type of project that allows you to earn more from your other projects.??
So now I'll answer that question from the title.??
Board of the World is my snowboarding and skateboard gear review website. I named it "Board of the World" because I was indeed bored with the monotony I'd run myself through day in and day out, and my escape for that was found while riding my snowboard.
Now, the honest answer is that back in August of 2020, Board of the World started as my SEO test case website. I used it to test strategies to see if they worked before recommending them to my clients.
As consultants, sometimes clients require proof to take action on your recommendations, and none of us should be using our other clients' data to share that proof. So, Board of the World was my website to break, test, share, and discuss without any consequences across my client list.??
Now, the awesome part was the site took off, and it's been really fun to work on.
By 2022, the site was ranking at the top of search results and bringing in 40k visits per month.
By 2023, it hit 50k visits per month.
Then 2024 hit, and it has been one wild ride.
The site was hit with Google's Helpful Content Update - this update heavily suppressed the visibility of my site as well as most small content creator/affiliate publisher websites. Any search query that was in position one was instantly repositioned to a non-traffic gaining zone.
It's been a year of trying to solve the puzzle of "Oh, we'll figure this out."
And the coolest part is that I did. The site is starting to bounce back for the queries it previously ranked for.
Here's where I'll get to that takeaway, though.??
Every single one of our businesses will face adversity. There will be times when you're given more than you deserve and times when you realize, "Oh yeah, I'm entitled to none of this."
The most important part is that you keep learning that next move.
If you work online, and you don't have a website that you own, I highly encourage you to start one.
Consider this when you're selecting the topic of your project, though.
You want a project that you would enjoy working on, no matter how lucrative or challenging it becomes.
It just needs to be something that's fun and meaningful to you, and hopefully, it's something that maybe a few other people would find as a helpful resource, too.
And understand that this is the type of project that pays you in energy, knowledge, new skills, and new connections. Those attributes are what pay you in dividends even when the original project does not.
Recently, something very cool happened.
Board of the World earned me an invitation to speak at Google later this month for their invite-only content creator event. The goal of the meeting is to discuss our observations on the latest algorithm in hopes of improving it.
That's a seat I never earned by working on my SEO clients' websites.
Steve, the snowboard reviewer, earned that, and not Steve, the SEO consultant.
However, Steve, the SEO consultant, benefits one hundredfold from that opportunity.? ? ?

PS. Now, here's the real reason I wrote this post.
Google has adopted AI heavily this year, and the search results certainly could use some improvement.
With this post I am trying to demonstrate a quirk in Google's new AI overview section at the top of the results with smaller brands not being cited as a source even when their information is being used by the AI result itself.
If you search "What is Board of the World," you'll see something like this.
It's a somewhat correct answer, as I do sell decks. However, the two cited sources have nothing to do with my website or skating or snowboarding.
It tells me Google's AI learns from my data, but their layout refuses to show it. (Google team, I'll be sharing this test example with you on the 29th.)
I am leaning on this article to set the record straight about my brand because my hunch is they're suppressing my site from that specific section, and they won't suppress LinkedIn even if I am the person who wrote the post.
Now, Google search "What is _____" for your brand.
If you don't see the correct info for your brand either, try recreating this test for yourself by writing the back story of your brand here on Linkedin Pulse.
I have a strong feeling that it will help you too.??
Good luck out there, friends. ?

4 个月Great article Steve, had no idea you had a background in SEO. Makes sense why your site has got so much share of voice since 2022. I figured you had been around for decades like us. Looking forward to learning more about your techniques and what works for your clients in San Fran later this month at the Google HQ.
