Not so useful AI

Not so useful AI

In the last edition, I shared my thoughts on useful AI .

Let us now look at the other side of the story “Not so useful AI”.

美世 shared some interesting insights on #WorkDesign within its #FutureOfWork studies.

One of the observations for me is that 64% of the time spent on various tasks by an HR Business Partner continues to remain "human" driven and only 7% can be replaced by technologies like Generative AI.

Data from Mercer Operations Scanner?

Yes, when you look at the above data, it feels like technology can impact (augment or replace) as much as 36% of the time spent by an HRBP on different tasks but is it the most effective role to invest in such cutting-edge technologies?

Let us look at another HR role, Total Rewards Leader. In this case, 27% of the time spent on tasks can be replaced by #GAI technologies, and an overall 57% of the time spent on tasks by Total Rewards leaders can be impacted (augment/replaced).

Data from Mercer Operations Scanner?

If you were the CHRO of a large company, on which tasks would you invest in #GenerativeAI? Will it be the HR Business Partner (or) the Total Rewards Leader?

Culture & AI

Let us now switch gears to move to a seemingly fuzzy topic, the impact of AI on #Culture.

The Culture Factor Group (erstwhile Hofstede Insights) did a cool experiment to evaluate #ChatGPT's capabilities in understanding the cultural nuances that impact human experiences.

If you know Hofstede's national culture study, you will appreciate the findings of this experiment even more but even if you are new to this topic, it is very simple to make sense of it.

As a part of this experiment, they assigned different personas to ChatGPT from various countries (US, India, Finland, Austria, Canada, Germany, Nigeria, and United Arab Emirates), and asked ChatGPT to play the role of a typical person from these countries.

Then they studied the gaps between how the various ChatGPT personas responded and the culture compass scores of Hofstede's (6-D model of national culture).

Can you guess how close the tech-enabled personas came?

ChatGPT's cultural representations missed the mark very noticeably, raising questions about its global adaptability.

The below graph shows the disparity between the scores of Chat GPT on Power Distance.

Power Distance scores disparity between ChatGPT and Hofstede's study

There are many interesting findings from the study showing how far a technology like ChatGPT is when it comes to a topic like "Culture".

Severe limitations of AI like ChatGPT

As we know now more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies are already clients of open AI in some form or other.

We are reading Sam Altman's grand plan to enhance the usage of open AI with the backing of Microsoft and largely are convinced that there won't be a slowdown anytime soon.

While no one can deny the power of today's #openai, I do believe that the landscape is not evenly positioned on different topics in which such technologies can be used.

Sometimes it can do more harm than help if we are not deliberate about where we are using and where we not using #GAI.

What frightened me the most from they study by The Culture Factor Group was to know that "ChatGPT never opted for neutrality, always leaning towards certain cultural biases. This sheds light on its programming and the inherent cultural influences embedded within."

I am curious to know how is your role changing at your workplace, especially with the upswing of Generative AI or AI technologies.

Let me know in the comments where else you think AI is not so useful.

Swaroop, ACC, SHRM-SCP this is a great #ai article. I am doing some research on #culture specifically if we can replace the #context switching that #biliingual and #multicultural people have. Anyways thanks for this…. This is why it’s important to include a multicultural lense when building AI.
