The not so subtle art of saying fuck.
We live in a time of hyper-sensitivity where "giving offence" is the ultimate no-no.
So does this mean we need to cleanse our language completely? Absolutely not, in fact if there's one thing I learnt from the ultimate feel-good show, Ted Lasso it's that it's okay for people to say fuck, shit, and all manner of swear words as they have no power by themselves, it is the intent in which they are used that dictates how we feel about them - of course, this is not true for all words - but you knew that already. Heck, every bestseller has the obligatory f*ck in the title these days (seriously, do better - if you give an actual fuck, be brave enough to do it without the ridiculous *).
At Missing Link, we are known to use colourful language, and while it may seem flippant at times, it's actually not the case - believe it or not we swear with specific intent. And that's what this week's video is about. The "strategic shit", and the "functional fuck" (I'll quit here before I start telling you about the "cathartic _____".):
It turns out that swearing may not be the enemy that we thought it was, in fact it could be our friend.
I read recently that researchers?at Keele University found that people could endure the pain of holding their hands in ice water longer if they were able to fire off f-bombs in the process compared to saying more friendly terms.
So, you have my permission to swear strategically. Give it a go - just know that less is more here, you can instigate the swearing, but it's not what you want to be remembered for.

3 年Really, at this stage of where we are at, I feel like I look the same at people that offended by swearing as people who have a problem with tattoos. A great way to qualify and disqualify potential people to work with. As with everything, in moderation, it's a powerful tool.

3 年Have used colourful language on occasion when meeting prospects/partners/clients for the first time, it's a good filter for whether we would be a culture fit long term. Or at the very least, whether they would put up with me ??
