So Many Guides Where to Go?.......

So Many Guides Where to Go?.......

When I received the third guide to the VGGTs or the The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (whew!) I started to wonder, am I the only one thinking this is one too many? And then more kept coming in! To the point where I couldn't keep up. And each of them are dense 100+ page documents in and of themselves. I couldn't help wondering - are these Guides really helpful - or are they a hammer looking for nails that dont want to be hit?

While I think the VGGT guidelines are a useful document and represent a win in terms of getting various disparate groups together to reach an agreement, it does raise the question - how useful are they? And especially for the private sector, the party everyone seems to be so excited about being at the VGGT table.

How many companies will seriously pay heed to the Guidelines and find the various Guides useful in reaching that end? Or is it a "win" to simply be engaged in the ongoing dialog itself - perhaps indeed that is the best result for some?

We thought it might be a good idea to try and do an inventory of the Guides - and developed the linked infographic as a result. Thanks very much to Theresa Wilson our associate who did all of the hard work in compiling the attached document. Hope you find it useful, interesting etc.. Do let us know what you think and have at it!

Notwithstanding the ubiquity of Google Maps et al, I have more than one map in my library, to use depending upon: where I am, where I want to go, mode of travel, the route to take and what to avoid, and how soon I want to get there.

Totally endorse the need for more convergence around land management solutions that can help improve transparency and credibility.

Hi Peter, appreciate the work of putting together the graphic. I've been thinking about something similar for a while; the founding principles of land administration. There should be one agreed upon cannon that land admin professionals can use to guide actions in conducting land work. As anyone can see, there is a multitude of them, and this may have the effect of diluting the message. A final, agreed-upon set should be promulgated by an international body and then signed on to and endorsed by other bodies. Stephen Calder
