So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
As we become more and more reliant on artificial intelligence, there is a risk that we will lose the ability to think for ourselves. If we manage to look at AI as a tool to augment our own intelligence rather than a replacement for it, things may actually turn out all right in the end.
AI is transforming many industries, and it is having a big impact on our lives. In some ways, AI is becoming like a second brain. It can remember things for us, it can do calculations faster than we can, and it can find information that we would never be able to find on our own. Browsing through a search engine is now like having a conversation with a very knowledgeable friend, and Netflix knows what we want to watch better than we do. Spotify keeps track of our musical tastes and suggests new songs that we might like. I'm sure you will have your own examples.
There is a risk that we will become too reliant on AI and we will lose the ability to think for ourselves. If we let AI take over too many tasks, we might forget how to do those tasks ourselves. We might also become too reliant on AI to make decisions for us. We might trust AI to make decisions that we should be making for ourselves. Would you trust an AI program to make financial decisions for you? How about decisions about your health? On one side, AI can help us make better decisions by providing us with more information. On the other side, AI might make us lazy thinkers.
Some people believe that we should be worried about the rise of artificial intelligence. They think that machines will eventually become smarter than humans and it will take over the world. Some even think that we should stop developing AI, because it might be too dangerous.
I don't believe we should be worried about the AI apocalypse. If we manage to look at AI as a tool to augment our own intelligence rather than a replacement for it, things may actually work out all right in the end. After all, we have been using tools to augment our intelligence for a long time. Books are a form of artificial intelligence that we use to remember things for us. Calculators are a form of AI that we use to do calculations faster than we can. The internet is a form of AI that we use to find information that we would never be able to find on our own. We should think of AI as just another tool that we can use to help us think better.
Of course, my definition of AI is quite broad. It includes anything that can help us think better, from simple tools like calculators to more complex systems like expert systems. It also includes things like search engines and recommendation systems. I believe that AI can be a force for good if we use it to augment our own intelligence rather than replace it. Let us look at a couple of practical examples:
Health: AI can help us make better decisions about our health. Imagine a personalized health assistant that knows your medical history, your lifestyle, and your genetic makeup. This assistant could give you tailored advice about diet, exercise, and medication. It could also help you detect early signs of disease, while communicating with your doctor if necessary.

Education: AI can also help us learn better. Imagine a tutor that knows your strengths and weaknesses, and can adapt the way it teaches you accordingly. This tutor could also give you personalized recommendations about what to study next, or help you when you're stuck on a particular problem.
Work: AI can help us be more productive at work. Have you seen colleagues who have 1,200 unread emails in their inbox? AI can help us deal with information overload by sorting and filtering information for us. It can also help us automate repetitive tasks, so that we can focus on more interesting and creative work. This very article was written with the help of AI, as I used a predictive text tool to generate ideas and suggestions for what to write next.
Not too long ago, long distance communication was a difficult and expensive task. Today, we can talk to anyone in the world for free with a simple phone call or video chat on whole variety of platforms. Before Wikipedia, if you wanted to know something, you had to go to a library and hope that they had a book on the topic. Today, we can find out anything we want to know with a few clicks on a search engine. Technology has always progressively changed the way we live our lives, the way we work, communicate, and learn. AI is just the latest example of this.
Many people are using Grammarly – it's a tool that uses AI to help you write better. It can check your spelling and grammar, and it can also suggest better words to use. It's like having a personal editor in your pocket, and the tool is already so established that many are probably no longer thinking of it as AI. This is known as the AI effect, I have written about this earlier.
Today's world is full of challenges, and AI can help us solve many of them. Not by replacing us, but by augmenting our own intelligence. Let us use AI to think better, so that we can make better decisions and lead better lives.
95% of this article were written by an AI, using my previous articles as training data. Title, topic, and introduction of this article are 100% what the AI came up with (see here: https://apigeek.net/openai/articles.html), and I've just added a few ideas myself & guided things into a certain direction, but let the AI write most of it. All the images in this article were generated by AI as well.
