With So Little To Be Sure Of
Celebrations of Stephen Sondheim and his genius songwriting are not uncommon.
But a sensational Sondheim show last night at Guild Hall in East Hampton, N.Y., by actress/singer Melissa Errico, several times a guest on my old For Your Ears Only radio broadcast, was far more than that -- as befits the Yale grad with an honors degree in art history and philosophy.
An exhilarating exaltation via Errico's enchanting voice, it was also an intuitive, intelligent exploration of the the multi-layered, often contradictory nature of Sondheim's lyrics -- and of the man himself, with whom she has worked on several productions
Errico's rendition of "Not While I'm Around," from blood-drenched "Sweeney Todd," was both pledge and lullaby with one of her three daughters was in the audience.
All of which prompts posting this link to a video about the man and his music made in conjunction with Errico's latest CD, "Sondheim Sublime," basis for the East Hampton show and those upcoming at The Art House in Provincetown, MA, (July 21 & 22); Cotuit Center for the Arts in Cotuit, MA (July 23); and Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA (July 26 & 27).
