Do You Actually Like What You Do?

Do You Actually Like What You Do?

I ran into somebody the other morning and was very loosely trying to explain what it is I do for a living. Rather than going into detail, I went with my standard quick hit "we do cool stuff with old cars" explanation. They asked if “I actually like what I do”, and I told them, “of course! I'm very lucky to be able to do what I do!” They didn't really seem to understand and replied, "so what's so special about old cars anyway?" I'd like to say that I offered an organic response, but what I chose to go with was my semi-regular new team member speech. The honest truth is, no matter if it's a 4 million-dollar Enzo era Ferrari or an $8,000 four door Ford, the reason that it even exists is sheerly because it's special. The fact we're talking about high maintenance, giant hunks of metal that are 30, 40, 50 and sometimes many more years old means that at some point, they meant an awful lot to somebody. This doesn't strictly have bearing on actual item itself, but largely it's story and what it's seen. These things were integral components of the caretakers who owned them. They witnessed births, deaths, marriages, graduations, etc and were right alongside and shared in the most important as well as often times the most tragic parts of people’s lives and yet positive or negative, remain important enough to still be here. Sometimes we visit our clients, and they have hundreds of cars and as such it's very easy to sort of overlook what the point of it all really is. Every single car has a story and at some point, has had somebody's heart and shared in their life and we're helping to keep that going. That's why what we do is special and that's why what we do is important. It's about the people too.

Anyway, Hagerty UK just put out a wonderful video that really, truly demonstrates this and it's definitely worth watching......

There are instances I should have kept most of collector vehicles I've owned through the years. Indeed there is a special connection and a story behind each one I've ever owned. Friends with the same passion for cars would agree. We had some great times with those cars. There's plenty of enjoyment and pride bringing the old iron back to it's glory days.

That's what I love about old cars.... The history and the stories, and (the older I get) the memories.

Yes you are right, some may find this difficult to understand (mostly millennials)but for some few (mostly petrolheads) make a lot of sense especially those who likes gas smell, carbs sound and metal.
