Not So Common

When I was in primary school, I remember once I was asked by a classmate if I could lend him a spare pen because he left his at home. The good news was, yes, I had a spare pen in my school bag, but it wasn’t a good pen because the ink could not flow so well. So, I decided to give my classmate the pen which I had used earlier, and I kept the spare pen for myself to use instead. Why? Because I thought I would know the not-so-good pen better and I would know how to fix it so that my classmate won’t have to deal with it. I thought this should have been called ‘common sense’ until I have come to the realization that not so many people would think the same way. In other words, common sense to you may not be so common to other people.
Tell me honestly, what would you do if you were in my situation?
- Do the same thing as I do.
- Give the spare pen to the classmate. Come on! It wasn’t my fault that my classmate did not have a pen on that day. At least I had something for him.
- Give the spare pen to the classmate and explain the issue so he will be aware.

3 å¹´I'd tell him i have a spare but it doesn't work well. If he is not happy with it then I'm sure there are other classmates who might have one. It's a primary school so I'm certain the teacher keeps a spare one all the time ??????. But yes common sense is not so common since people started saying "It's common sense". ??

3 å¹´i think what "common sense" is, is also driven by the environment & what is considered a "sure win" to the person. This differs from environment(different environments require different solutions - a CEO's common sense solution will be quite different from a worker), life experiences (eg life hacks are examples of life experience based common sense), & by the level of consideration of said person (some people dont think through everything, but overthink on some). All 3 are common sense answers, i would: 1 - lend the good pen if it's mission critical eg he has a test that morning while i do not (environmental consideration) 2 - lend the bad pen if i knew he was likely going to spoil it as he doesnt take care of his stuff in the past (life experience consideration) 3 - lend the bad pen and explain him how to use it, if i have a test that morning and he has one too, but i cant risk my test for his mistake. But alas, you are right, common sense is indeed rare now - in a world where technology and media has driven people to make decisions based on specific triggers, the average mind now has to make much less detailed informed decisions. This isnt just the death of common sense - it is the death of critical and independent thought.
