All too often, IT professionals don’t understand the “why” of their jobs.
Here’s an example.
Earlier in my career, I had a manager who had me patching systems and updating firewall configs.
But he had no idea how to do it himself.
And this irritated me!
This guy is making twice my salary and he can’t even do the tech stuff? (My inner thoughts)
Upon reflection (the benefit of growing a little older and wiser), I realized a critical difference between us…
The purpose (or the why) of our jobs.
See, I had the technical sense, and he had the business sense.
Each of our “whys” were different but equally important.
I wasn’t just patching systems because he told me to.
No. I was addressing vulnerabilities and helping the company maintain PCI DSS compliance.
And my manager was there to orchestrate the team to ensure all objectives were met.
In truth, understanding your “why” is the real game-changer. I’ve seen peers who catch on to their company’s purpose double their salaries—even in non-technical roles.
We were both helping the company meet its goals and offset the risk of losing money.
If you don’t grasp the “why” behind your job or your company’s mission, you’re at a HUGE disadvantage.
In fact, if layoffs were to occur, you’d likely be first on the chopping block!
But if you align yourself with your company’s purpose, then you will bring greater value…
And that’s how you stay indispensable, get paid well, and build job security.
Understand the business!
