And So It Begins

Beginning a new year often yields a mix of nostalgia and excitement. Wistful for what has been and anticipation of what lies ahead. It's the time of year when the whole world celebrates in some fashion and on the same day. What a sharp and lovely contrast to the turmoil or uncertainty that often characterizes other days all year long.

The executives I advise typically do three things to start the year well:

• Reflect on their decisions and actions, those that served them well or no longer serve.
• Recognize what (and who) has contributed most to their progress in meeting objectives;
• Renew their commitments to the people, values, goals, and priorities that have the greatest potential for impact on their lives and business.

Many of them reward others' contributions tangibly, with a note of thanks, a monetary bonus, or a gift. Greeting the new year, they take the opportunity to enrich themselves and their teams with tools and resources that spur strategic thinking and action. These three articles – and my book – may help:
