Snowstorm effects on electricity distribution
PLS CADD modelling of Power Networks has become the norm for Transmission Assets. This means that at higher voltages, the precise site-specific conditions of the wires, structures and their environment are well understood, and threats from extreme weather events can be predicted and ameliorated.
Unfortunately for many customers in densely populated areas, the effect of extreme weather events is sharply experienced on lower voltage distribution network assets. This is because they have not had the same beneficial treatment as their transmission cousins and have not had their wires, structures and environments modelled in PLS CADD.
Once accurate powerline modelling has extended into the power distribution space, they will also be able to access the site-specific modelling capabilities, which will make identification of 'at risk' structures and wires, and 'danger trees' much more accessible. The site-specific modelling capability will also enable more effective emergency response and restitution.
