Snippets from the Age of COVID-19: June 8, 2020.
Gardening became more important when restrictions had been more pronounced. It was the personal space that included the green space of one's own yard. The soil under one's feet is a piece of heaven that has many golden opportunities for growth and development.
Since the weekly trip to buy groceries potentially exposed oneself to viruses of the COVID-19 kind, planting vegetables that one could subsist on was the logical choice. My wife, Karmen, is the gardening expert. Once the weather became favorable for planting, she threw herself, heart and soul, into cultivating life-sustaining crops.
Karmen planted chives, radishes, lettuce, sunflowers. We had sour cherries, honeyberries, and rhubarb from previous years. Now, for me, I'm not a big vegetable or fruit eater, so most of the bounty goes to her. Still, I enjoy tending the yard while she looks after the crops.
The rhubarb has grown quite well. Karmen followed a recipe that made juice from the rhubarb leaves. She didn't even add sugar! She diluted the juice. Karmen claimed that it was sweet and pleasant tasting. I have not tried it yet since I still have to get used to the idea that juice can be made from rhubarb!
The joys of working our little plot of land is a great relief from staying inside the house. The additional benefits of fresh air and sunshine are great ways to enhance one's health.
