Snippets from the Age of COVID-19: July 1, 2020.
It's Canada Day during the pandemic of 2020. No fireworks are scheduled in the Calgary region. The Calgary Zoo is open. Heritage Park is open. These are more venues to let the virus spread in crowded areas. Haven't we learned from our neighbors to the south?
Going to the country to isolated places where the tourists don't flock to seems like a viable alternative. The other alternative is watching virtual celebrations.
Looking back, it seems what a difference a year makes! The world that we knew before the pandemic seems like we are now on a different planet. The things that we enjoyed and took for granted are now precious memories. The spirit of altruism and social interactions in the flesh have been largely replaced by those of caution, fear, and infection control.
We have seen people in the United States clamoring for the freedom to gather in massive groups, whether it be on beaches, malls, protests, churches, etc. We have seen the scoffers who have decried the use of masks and physical distancing. We have seen the photos of crowded bars and now look at what's happening in the West and South of America.
Things are not so rosy now. More and more politicians are donning masks. Some hospitals are turning away patients due to full capacity. Restrictions are being re-introduced since an economy cannot be revitalized if everyone is infected with no herd immunity in sight. Will those adherents of "freedom" scream that getting infected with COVID-19 is their divine right? I don't think so!
