Sneaky Costs of Outdated Technology

Sneaky Costs of Outdated Technology

How outdated technology can deplete your budget

The technology landscape is constantly evolving. It seems like a new device is introduced to the world every day. How can you keep up with so much change? At the end of the day, it all works the same, right? Well, not quite. Here’s the harsh reality—an infrastructure with older technology does more harm than good. Dated resources saddle companies with long-term issues that result in expensive headaches.

There are many reasons you might avoid an upgrade:

  • The current system still works (so, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it)
  • Transitioning en masse is too difficult and would disrupt workflow
  • Your IT team doesn’t have the time to devote to building new solutions
  • You’re unsure which solutions are best fit for your business

When it comes to IT and telecom management, the best approach is a proactive one. If you aren’t invested in a mobile device management (MDM) program, now’s the time to start; otherwise, more trouble might be on the horizon.

The Five Key Risks of Dated Technology

Legacy technology is anything outdated with a newer version available. While it can keep your business running, it can compromise productivity levels and security strength, and it can drive up the demand for maintenance. Let’s analyze the primary dangers you might run into:

Lowered Productivity

There’s never a good time for downtime. Anytime your operation is forced to shut down, it prevents you from fulfilling actions that can turn profit. Unfortunately, many of these issues are often linked to aging tech products. Are slower devices holding your employees back? If so, it would be wise to upgrade to a system with higher bandwidth and more efficient functionalities.

Technology should propel you toward success. Your team wants to do their jobs well, but they can only do so when the right resources are available. Outdated systems hinder the ability to complete tasks, create frustration, and can damage the team’s morale. To avoid risking a breakdown, you should separate yourself from antiquated systems.

Security and Compliance Concerns

As a business owner, there’s nothing more important than the safety of employees and customers. Security is a top priority at all times, and much of that applies to the cyber landscape. But protection comes at a price. Many industries have regulatory entities that create and maintain security compliance standards. When these regulations are not followed, it can lead to more complicated problems.

In today’s information-driven world, we need more than just a firewall and antivirus software to protect our assets. As technology evolves, so do cyber threats. If you’re not taking the steps to modernize your infrastructure, you’re opening the door for risks. Neglecting an update can expose your infrastructure to various threats and put critical information in harm’s way. If you want the extra layer of protection on your devices, always keep your technology updated.

Data Loss

When was the last time you backed up your data? What format did you complete the backup in? If your backup solution is outdated, there’s severe risk of losing data. When your equipment is at the end of life, they stop accepting firmware and security patches. What’s at risk? Everything. Customer reports, financial information, employee files—they’re all up for grabs.

If you do lose data, it can be costly to try and recover it. The worst part is that there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to restore all, if any, of your lost data. To prevent these types of issues, it’s best to retire your outdated software and devices that are no longer accepting updates from the manufacturer, mobile carrier, or software development company.

Employee Turnover

Retaining talented and reliable employees is important to many business owners. If your employees are satisfied, they are more likely to perform at higher standards. You may not realize that the technology your company uses greatly affects your employees’ satisfaction. When employees are faced with slow moving programs, outdated devices, or tech that creates constant issues, it can create frustration. Employees may feel stressed to meet deadlines, complete daily tasks, or perform well when they have slow or outdated tech.

Companies who provide technology that aids their employees’ success and makes daily tasks easier see higher levels of employee satisfaction. See less turnover by supporting your team and their day-to-day with the right tools.

Rising IT Support Costs

Preserving obsolete tech can put a dent in your bottom line. Older software, phone systems, and computers typically no longer receive updates from manufacturers and suffer various errors as a result. When issues do arise, it’s likely you’ll have costs for repairs and attempted data recovery. Keep in mind that it’s not always possible to restore lost items after system failures. You’ll need a dedicated IT team just to keep up with the frequent issues.

Newer technology requires less upkeep and attention to maintenance. Take advantage of modern devices and software, it will save you money in the long-run.

Scrapping good, serviceable products is a form of capitalist Waste, driven by the intention of OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to promote the Sale of New Products by a more or less intensive reduction in Product Support by (1) a reduction of Spare Parts production, (2) increase of Spare Part prices (when in fact the cost of Old Spare Parts Production goes down continuously) and/or (3) conscious reduction Product in Repairability. There are huge differences between the various categories of Products as characterized by their Lifecycle length, but the phenomena are very similar. For instance Aircraft can be operated for many decades (see the Boeing B-52H that may reach a 100 years Lifecycle), while the "capitalized" Commercial Aircraft may results in their scrapping after 10 years or less. What a Waste!?
