SNEAK PEEK: What You’ll Learn from Dr. Chris Steel at this Year’s Perioperative Care Boot Camp
Zeev N. Kain, MD. MBA.
OVBC | Chancellor’s Professor | Value-Based Care | President, American College of Perioperative Medicine | 1% Top Cited Scientists | Executive Director, UCI Center on Stress Health
As founder of The Perioperative Surgical Home Summit, I invite you to join me at this year’s Enhanced Recovery after Surgery - Perioperative Surgical Home (ERAS/PSH) Boot Camp. CODE Technology CEO Breanna Cunningham recently sat down with Dr. Chris Steel, one of the conference’s speakers, to talk about what will make this year’s Boot Camp a can’t-miss event. Enjoy this special preview of the conference — I hope to see you there.
After the first-ever Interdisciplinary Conference on Orthopedic Value-Based Care conference sold out, there was a demand for more. Several institutions were contacting The Perioperative Surgical Home Summit with the hopes of learning more about how to create and maintain an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery-Perioperative Surgical Home (ERAS-PSH) model. Doing so is no easy task, and only a few organizations have done it successfully.
Enter this year’s Perioperative Care Boot Camp, held in Houston from June 9-11. Each of the Boot Camp’s 39 presentations (including eight Q&A sessions) are only half an hour long in order to maximize information retention. With a nuts-and-bolts approach to everything, attendees will be able to take immediate action items home with them. They’ll have the knowledge and tools to start implementing first thing Monday morning.
But what separates this conference from others is the impressive list of speakers. Right in the middle of it all, is the ever-so-humble, Dr. Chris Steel, who — when not performing his clinical duties as Director of Anesthesia at White River Health Systems in Batesville, Arkansas — is also helping hospitals build successful PSH from the ground up.

Dr. Steel first crossed paths with the conference’s founder, Dr. Zeev Kain, a few years ago through PSH 1.0. At that time, Dr. Kain was serving as Department Chair at UC Irvine; Steel was at White River. While these two organizations could not be more different, one thing both entities do have in common is a successful ERAS-PSH model.
“At the end of PSH 1.0, we presented our success. We were two members that bent the needle on quality and cost,” says Steel.
That's why it's a no-brainer for Dr. Kain to bring Dr. Steel on board for the Boot Camp. "He has a wonderful personality, he's very collaborative, and he's a very good teacher, and so I said, 'Well, guess what? He's a great match for this meeting,'" says Dr. Kain.
Dr. Steel has also taken on the role of Chief Quality Officer at White River, blazing the trail for a “bundle mentality” which was successfully implemented throughout the organization. As a result, White River has standardized general surgery, OBGYN, and cardiology with the same PSH mentality.
Flash forward to 2017. Dr. Steel has emerged as an expert in one of healthcare's most trendy topics: the change in payment models. With his small-town, big-picture attitude and tenacious spirit, Dr. Steel’s Boot Camp sessions will provide attendees with a real nuts-and-bolts approach to setting up successful bundled payment systems.
How did Dr. Steel rise to the top? When you hear his story, it becomes obvious. Steel is curious, smart, determined, and a self-learner. Mix that with a business-minded entrepreneurial spirit, and a healthy dose of passion for quality, and you have a rising star who holds promise toward becoming a legacy.
Dr. Steel knew from day one that he wanted to be a doctor and serve the small-town community he was raised in. In fact, White River is actually the hospital Steel was born in. But, not everyone takes the same path. As Robert Frost said, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”
After taking a spot at Penn State, where he was a foreign medical school graduate, Dr. Steel recalls, “I felt like I had something to prove, and so I ended up reading anesthesiology textbooks before residency started.” As a result, Dr. Steel started with a leg up on the rest of his classmates.
Did that lead to more time to relax and enjoy college football games? No, that’s not his style. “What that allowed me to do is, since I had read about a lot on anesthesia, I was able to spend more time reading the billing and the business side of hospital management.” Dr. Steel then proceeded to effectively turn his residency into the equivalent of an MPH, MBA, and Healthcare Administration degree.

Dr. Steel brings a unique perspective to the conference, having been tremendously successful as an early adopter of alternative payment models (from bundled payments to gainsharing) and creating physician-hospital alignment.
Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the Boot Camp, the mingling of ideas and agendas from all viewpoints is something that Dr. Steel embraces. “I’m a big nerd who really loves talking about this stuff. I like talking to administrators to hear their side. I like talking to surgeons as much as anyone can enjoy talking to a surgeon. I feel like I learn something every time I talk to someone. I don't know if it sounds cheesy, but I hope to talk to as many people as possible because they're going to see things in their settings that I've never even contemplated being in a small area.”

7 年Dr Kain, I was ask by a physician executive CMO, if this conference or your previous Boot Camps are available digitally? I told them knowing you I would believe so but that I would check. How, if so, can they be purchased?
