A snapshot of July

Dear friends of carbon removal,

We're excited to share two reports with you that the Climeworks team curated: the highlights of our Direct Air Capture Summit 2023 and our third industry snapshot. Both publications feature independent expert views on the benefits of direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) as a high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solution - a conversation that we're keen to continue at Climate Week NYC in September and are putting into practice at our Mammoth plant under construction.

Let's connect at Climate Week NYC!

Climate Week NYC is the largest annual climate event of its kind, with over 400 events that transform the city into a hub for climate action. And we believe that high-quality CDR should be a part of the conversation. On September 21 Climeworks will host three events to?inspire, foster connections and drive climate action.

The latest Climeworks industry snapshot is live

In this third edition of our bi-annual industry snapshot report, we feature contributions from scientists, industry, and policy experts discussing direct air capture (DAC) technology and exploring how it can help to ‘supercharge’ carbon removal. Our expert contributors explain overall DAC technology with a specific explainer of Heirloom's technology, the role of DAC+S in a carbon removal portfolio, life cycle assessments (LCAs) of DAC+S, and put a particular emphasis on the quality criteria scalability and measurability.

Highlights of the fourth Climeworks Direct Air Capture Summit

Bringing together the insights from 32 speakers and moderators, as well as Climeworks' research and experience, the highlights of the 2023 edition of the Direct Air Capture Summit outline what it takes to advance high-quality CDR solutions. Pivotal years are ahead for DAC to enable an industry-wide scale-up to gigaton capacities by 2050. Deployment-led innovation, decisive action from the private sector, government procurement of CDR, robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) as well as community engagement, are crucial levers to make the gigaton target a reality.

Construction progress at Mammoth

The construction of Mammoth, our largest DAC+S plant yet, continues to follow an ambitious timeline and is making visible progress in the context of challenges in global supply chains.?Now that the harsh Icelandic winter has passed, we’re pleased to share that a further key piece of the facility is about to be completed: the infrastructure for the in-situ storage by Carbfix .?This involves the creation of boreholes (narrow shafts vertically inserted into the basalt ground) that will carry the CO? that Mammoth captures underground for mineralization in basalt.

Dive into our construction update to learn more about the progress in Iceland, how the plant's design differs from Orca, and why geological storage of?CO? plays a critical role on our journey to gigaton. And, of course, to see more pictures of Mammoth coming to life!

The Economist Group renewed their commitment to high-quality CDR

After The Economist Group became the first media group to buy CDR services from Climeworks in 2021, they have made an additional purchase to work towards their?SBTi-approved target to reach net zero by 2050. With this, The Economist Group not only shows?confidence in our high-quality and high-integrity approach for CDR but that all companies - not only pioneers in the finance, tech and insurance industries - can and must take action.
