The Perks of a Study Abroad Experience

No alt text provided for this image

Studying abroad presents a great opportunity to learn at a new school, live with new people, and experience life in an entirely different country. While studying abroad, you’ll be faced with many opportunities and difficulties which provide you with a better perspective of the world around you. Whether you’re an undergraduate student or studying abroad for a graduate/gap year, there’s a lot to consider when deciding to take the trip.

Read below for some of the benefits of studying abroad, the best methods to choose a location, and how to know if the opportunity is right for you!

Benefits

Opportunity: Studying abroad is an opportunity of a?lifetime. Not only will you learn in a new environment, but you’ll?live?in a new environment. It also teaches you how to interact and be comfortable in an environment you likely aren’t used to.

Traveling:?Studying abroad allows you to visit places you likely?haven’t seen before. Whether domestic or international, many programs offer day trips to help students explore nearby regions. From museums to beaches, many top destinations have a vast array of experiences for you to?explore.

Living vs. Visiting:?Many times, when you go on a trip for a couple of days, you visit the tourist sites. While amazing in itself, it’s not the?full experience. Studying abroad allows you to become immersed among the locals, providing you with a truly authentic experience you won’t get from vacationing alone.

Location?

Follow Yourself:?when it comes to studying abroad, you don’t have to travel where everyone has gone before. Go where?you?truly want to go. That’ll make for an optimal, more personalized experience - and one you’ll?never forget.

Consider nearby locations:?when studying abroad, you’re likely going to be staying for a?few months?at a time. Therefore, consider other locations you can visit outside of your home community when traveling there. Western Europe and Southeast Asia are just a few of many examples of regions with many places to?explore!

Current Circumstances:?The world?isn’t perfect. There are social, economic, and political circumstances you must take into account before you decide on a place to study. Make sure to do your?research, using your best judgment to remain safe throughout your time abroad.

Is It Right for You?

Studying abroad is an amazing experience, one that is certainly for?most people. But like most opportunities, it’s not for everyone. Homesickness, expenses, and personal responsibility in a new country are a few reasons that may shy you away from it.

However, that being said, studying abroad is truly a?once-in-a-lifetime experience.?You’ll be challenged culturally, socially, and mentally, but the memories and lessons you’ll learn will make it all worth it. Be sure to speak with mentors, your study abroad advisor, and alumni of programs to learn more if studying abroad is right for you. Chances are, it may just be your?best experience yet!

Business Buzz

?? Salary Mandates

Last week,?California proposed a bill?that would?require?companies with 15 or more employees to?report salary ranges?for each of their job postings. Furthermore, the law also states that firms with more than 100 employees would have to report pay scales by gender, race, and ethnicity. This information would then be made available to the public. Governor Gavin Newsom has until?September 30th?to either sign or veto the bill, a bill revolutionizing the hiring process for millions of employees across the state. Colorado and New York City have already implemented similar policies into law, demonstrating a growing trend in salary transparency across the U.S.

What this Means

Laws like this one demonstrate the public outcry for pay transparency and an equitable job-search process. The last couple of years has been a lot of talk regarding the need to provide previously disadvantaged groups with the tools they need to succeed in the corporate world. It’s refreshing to see this talk finally become action.

“Snapped Off” - Snapchat Lays Off Over 1,200 Full-Time Employees

In what seems to be a continuous trend,?Snap Inc. laid off over 1,200 employees last week. That’s about?20%?of the?company’s total workforce. According to a few of those laid off, many of the employees were put on schedule for a quick meeting with their direct managers without any explanation regarding the subject. Within the meeting, managers read off a script, breaking the news of their situation and the means to access their benefits.

While this was the case for many, some had it even worse—some were?booted?from their work materials without any explanation of their release. This left confusion, sadness, and pandemonium—and still,?no answers?from the company.
