Snakes and Science
Our first visit to Science North was a long-awaited adventure for my family. The Science Center was a treasure trove of animals and insects, with the large snakes being the most captivating. My wife, who has a deep-seated fear of snakes, always reacts dramatically whenever she encounters one in the countryside.?
After that experience, we went to the beach so my six-year-old granddaughter could go swimming for the first time. The lifeguards were on duty, and the small roped-off area had many other children. Soon, things started to get surreal…
A mother duck was swimming with seven ducklings beside the swimming area. It was strange to see the ducks swim into the small roped-off area full of children. The children chased them away, and they swam back over the rope to safety.?
But something was wrong… The children were coming out of the water along with my wife and granddaughter. I was standing at the shore and saw the mother duck chasing and biting something moving toward me.?
By this time, my wife was beside me, and the children, led by one of the fathers, were heading towards the mother duck. The next part happened incredibly fast. The man reached into the water, grabbed a snake by its tail, and threw it far away in one swoop.?

I watched the snake flying, and at the same moment, a girl came around the corner of the lifeguard hut. The snake landed on her foot, and she stumbled off the grass and landed in the lake with the snake.?
In astonishment, I stepped backward, fell onto the rocky ground, and landed hard on my elbow. The girl was fine, the mother duck was happy with her family, I think the snake was okay, and I was the only one injured because of a snake…?
The moral of this story is that nature is full of snakes and animals, so don’t be alarmed since they are only trying to survive as they try to run or slither away from us.
Thanks for reading my newsletter about Science in Your Life and the evolution of our consciousness.? Be happy and see you next time, cheers.
