Reduction of carbon footprint of rebar mill?
SMS group modernized the rebar mill of Feralpi Group in Lonato, Italy to realize an environmentally friendly rebar production. With this modernization, Feralpi Group will meet the construction industry's growing demand for CO2-reduced rebar to enable construction projects with a low carbon footprint.
As part of the mill’s modernization project, SMS group implemented technical solutions for the largest emission sources in the area of steel production and in the furnace area. To tackle the high CO2 emission sources in the furnace area, SMS group supported Feralpi by dismantling the billet reheating furnace of rolling mill no. 1.
Replacement of billet reheating furnace by induction technology leading to direct loading of hot billets from continuous casting to rolling mill
To permanently reduce CO2 emissions, a series of environmentally friendly Elotherm induction furnaces were installed. The installation of a chain transfer and an overhead conveyor enables the direct loading of hot billets from the continuous casting to the rolling line. Shortening this process not only saves production time, but also energy and emission-heavy production steps. This modernization makes it possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the entire rebar mill at Feralpi’s Lonato site.????
