Smoother Sailing for GB-Northern Ireland Freight?
Irish Freight Solutions Ltd.
Offering direct logistics solutions across the UK & Ireland, helping our clients achieve their goals.
What could this deal mean for transport companies and logistics providers moving goods across the Irish Sea?
The aim is to reduce frictions stemming from the Northern Ireland Protocol by empowering Stormont to selectively opt out of future EU laws that could hinder trade flows to and from GB. There will also no longer be automatic alignment to all EU regulations.
?
In practice, this offers hope of minimizing additional customs processes, documentation, supply chain disruptions and costs associated with the current Protocol for freight carriers. Transport companies have struggled with the complexities of a border in the Irish Sea despite Northern Ireland remaining part of UK customs territory.
Here is my take on the document
?? Green Lane changed to the UK Internal Market Lane with minimal checks
?? Red Lane will remain
?? Checks carried out by UK Officials
?? There will be a cost for these checks
I’m keeping an open but cautiously optimistic mindset. The progress is welcome, but the logistical impacts remain to be seen. For our sector, the priority is easing shipping operations between Northern Irish and mainland UK suppliers and customers and we are as always to help our clients ensure we move their goods as seamlessly as possible across the Irish sea.
