Smooth Moves for Happy Kids

Moving to a new country with children can be a daunting task, but with the right approach, it can be an enriching adventure for the entire family.

Moving with children is not just a change of address; it's an opportunity for personal growth, resilience, and a broader perspective. Unfortunately your children may not see things this way in the beginning.

I have made over 12 moves with my children and while it was an emotional roller coaster, I did learn alot and finally figured out how to make it as painless as possible for them.

Now what I am about to share is not a magic formula, there will still be tears, but you will be able to relieve some of their stress and have everyone on the same page rather than hearing the screams of how you are ruining their lives.

Top 10 lessons I learned along the way.

  1. Timing is Key: Choose a calm moment to share the news. Avoid hectic times or rushed conversations. Create an atmosphere where everyone can express their feelings openly.
  2. Express Empathy and Understanding: Remember what it was like being their age and empathize with the emotions your kids might be feeling. Leaving behind familiar surroundings, friends, and routines. By openly recognizing their potential anxieties, you create a safe space for them to express their thoughts and feelings.
  3. Address Concerns with a Positive Outlook: Anticipate the questions your children might have about their new school, making friends, or daily life in the new country. Address these concerns with a positive outlook, emphasizing the opportunities for personal development and cultural exploration.
  4. Engage, Include, Empower: Making decisions as a family fosters a sense of unity and control. When it comes to moving, involve your children in the decision-making process. Openly discuss the move, address their concerns, and consider their preferences. Empowering them with a voice in the decision will make them feel more secure about the journey ahead.
  5. Address Concerns with a Positive Outlook: Anticipate the questions your children might have about their new school, making friends, or daily life in the new country. Address these concerns with a positive outlook, emphasizing the opportunities for personal development and cultural exploration.
  6. Focus on the Positives: Moving to a new country brings a wealth of opportunities. Excite your children by highlighting the positives – new friends, exciting cultural experiences, and incredible adventures awaiting them. Share positive stories about the destination to build anticipation and enthusiasm. Turning the focus to the exciting aspects helps your kids look forward to the adventure.
  7. Highlight the Family Adventure: Segue into the idea of this move as a collective adventure, stressing that the family is a strong, supportive unit. This is not just a relocation; it's an opportunity for everyone to grow, learn, and create lasting memories together.
  8. Involve Them in Planning: Include your children in the decision-making process when feasible. Let them contribute ideas or suggestions about the new home, school, or neighbourhood. This involvement can empower them and make them feel more in control.
  9. Frame it as an Adventure: Emphasize the positive aspects of the move, the chance to explore new places, make new friends, and experience different cultures. Paint the move as an exciting adventure rather than a loss.
  10. Create a Countdown: Establish a countdown to the move, using it as an opportunity to build anticipation and excitement. Plan small, meaningful activities as a family during this time to create positive memories associated with the move.

Remember, this journey is not just a relocation but a remarkable adventure for the whole family. By incorporating these tips, you're not just moving; you're embarking on a new chapter filled with exciting possibilities.
