SmokeD’s Mission: Why Does It Matter to Austin?

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, 224 out of the 254 counties in Texas experienced wildfires in 2022. As of August 1, 2023, the Texas A&M Forest Service has confirmed that over 8,500 acres of land in Texas has been destroyed by wildfires. Unfortunately, the scorching temperatures and extreme drought conditions in the Austin area make it a virtual hotbed for wildfires.??

SmokeD’s mission is to increase the level of safety of people and animals living in high-risk areas, which are particularly exposed to fires. By implementing an AI-integrated wildfire detection system, SmokeD’s solution helps to protect people, property and landscape.??

SmokeD has launched the Austin Wildfire Detection Project to expand wildfire detection efforts - a coalition of patron individuals and businesses that share a common vision of protecting Austin and its surrounding area by detecting fires before they become too large to be effectively controlled.??

How does the SmokeD system work??

SmokeD devices with built-in camera modules and microcomputers mounted on high masts continuously record images and analyze photos in search of the first signs of smoke or flames. When detected, the system automatically sends an alert with the fire's exact location to the web or mobile app users. The fire is detected within approximately 10 minutes, increasing the probability of extinguishing it before it gets out of control.??
